The trackpad was definitely different, took awhile to get used to. I liked it personally and found it really smooth and easy to use

I would use it over analog sticks because you use a lot less energy/force so you won't get fatigued on your hands on long gaming sessions.

It's very clear Valve is beta testing consumers.

I actually really like the d-pad, It looks like it is actually 4 distinct buttons instead of one big finicky hat switch.

Will make it a lot more useful when you try to bind those buttons to something other than direction (cause honestly who actually uses a dpad for movement these days) as you wont constantly get accidental commands that are common with traditional pads.

Now if only they had 4 little tiny diagonal buttons between the 4 cardinal direction buttons, for the occasional fighting game. Would be a bit cramped though I guess.

I've been dreaming of a D-pad with eight buttons my whole life.

To bring the concept to it's logical conclusion though, what I really want is a digital/analog hybrid pad, with digital actuation (either on or off) but analog in its direction (infinite number of input angles).

Fortunately, the main pads on the Steam controller actually come close to that (and I like the four separate buttons for the D-pad as well. You can actually cut up the D-pad on Playstation controllers to get the same effect).

YES. To this day I have to tear half the spring out of an analog stick if I'm going to use it for more than a few minutes.

Back in the 90's I played my thumb to death, literally, it's worn out and I have some combination of carpel tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, and probably arthritis.

The Steam controller is the only controller ever released that I will be able to use unmodified.

I actually preferred the original button layout, but if I wouldn't mind the update if they just would have kept the top-corner buttons as well as putting the button grids on the bottom corners. You can never have too many buttons (G600 user).

This was a smart move in my opinion.

I was thinking about picking one up and trying out the software that enables you to use the PS4 gamepad's touchpad as a mouse. It sounds interesting and I really love the new ergonomics of the PS4 controller, but I really want to give Valve's Steam controller a try. I guess I can buy a cheap bluetooth keyboard or something if I really need text input.

I've heard that the best way to use SteamOS is to just use Steam in Big Picture mode on your favorite flavor of Linux instead of actually using SteamOS. rolleyes.gif

That d-pad is questionable. Feel free to hijack the Sega method d-pad Valve.

But its okay! Valve has made a wrapper for OpenGL so soon you'll see all your old games (and new ones too!) being ported to Linux! /sarcasm

I'm looking forward to it personally, for the same reason Zero4549 posted. I'm tired of the finicky d-pad on my 360 controller.
