lucky you then but it doesnt change the fact that they are fragile. abit of a hit or miss as my HTC phone seemed to survive the USB trial after 5+ years while my samsung started to die recently though i do blame myself for mishandling it a few times

my phone being 3 years old is starting to wear out on the USB connector. mine has already detached itself from the PCB is only held in by friction

apple is big enough with wide enough user base to push themselves as the standard. when is the last time yo heard of an universal android compatible dock. apple do share the same plug for all their ios devices and that is a mind blowing amount vs others with a billion iterations of mUSB

Also, I've been using multiple handheld devices for years, like many others, and I've yet to break a connector (except those ridiculously small, needle thin power connectors - those can DIAF), so once again the cost of something does not equate to it's value in society.

And I'm sorry but if you spend $800 on a phone that's up to you, but I buy it for the tech, not to feel like I've got some luxury product... Couldn't be more pretentious. You want luxury, buy a solid gold phone with a titanium power connector... otherwise kthanx but we'll all welcome the introduction of open standards.
Well I just don't like a good phone to feel like crap just due to a connector and if I can wiggle a connector in it's port it is per definition a junk connector and a weak point.
The Sony Experia Z had some problems with it's junk connector so a good connector can make all the difference.

I buy my products for the feel that they work rather than for tech only I made that mistake a couple of times with laptop's and I now know that you can better have a higher grade with lower specs than the other way around.

It is designed that way, unfortunately. The idea was, if I remember correct, to make the connector that way that if it breaks then it breaks on the cable side, not on the device side. With small side unfortunately comes also the physical fragility. Same with mini DP vs full DP or with mini HDMI vs full HDMI, the smaller from factor is easier to damage as it's not as rigid. But as it is intended for smartphones they just went for the smallest common standard around as a compromise.

I dont know what people do to call the micro USB plugs fragile....
I am still using my charger from my samsung galaxy ace as a charger for my galaxy s4....I dont even use the boxed charger that came with the s4..

But on the other hand my partner has gone through 5 LB iphone charger cables woth the same issue..

The cable weakened and broke at the base of the plug..
Out of the 5 cables 3 where apple branded and the other 2 where Belkin cables...

You're sure they were Apple branded and not knockoffs? I still use the charger that came with the Iphone 3GS with my 4S that is over 4 years of usage. The reason they are that durable is probably that they are extremely wide and almost as thick as micro usb actually micro usb is only 1/3 as wide of a Iphone charger I think.

Perhaps we can find some middle ground that fits both sides I find the new chargers to be quite fragile that Apple offers for their Ipad and such but that twice as wide would do however I admit it is more fragile and will break easier than the previous connector.

you mean like my old phone?

regular round wallplug connector to charge, and a USB B connector for data. i failed to mention said phone melted itself into a lump on my desk cause i was charging it and transferring pictures off...lol

Still have my original 2 30 pin Apple cables from my iPod Mini's ( http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1353#ipodmini ) from 2004. Plus all of my others ones since then, all doing just fine.

I have however broken countless MicroUSB cables and ports on the phones themselves.
As much as I like the concept, I know in actuality it is just going to result in everyone still using mUSB 2.0 12 years from now, when a better charger could already be made today, never mind then.

As long as all the phones are still using it, there is no need to fix or surpass the USB standard for PC either, since no one likes fragmentation, right?

This is just going to lead to a standstill in data/power cable interface progress.

my apple plug from 2003 still works.

issue with mUSB isnt with the charger or cable itself but the port on the phone and other devices like HDD. they get torn off the PCB or just became loose
