Diablo 3 - 670 FTW vs 780

Thread Starter
I've been playing a ton of Diablo 3 lately, on both my machines, and I've noticed a pretty big difference in FPS on both my rigs. Although I'm not sure about other titles, Diablo 3 "seems" to be running much better on my weaker machine. My 670FTW, (AMD 960T with 2 unlocked cores and a mechanical HDD) averages around 150-160FPS. This card is running with a modded BIOS, at 1.3GHz on the core and 7GHz on the mem. When I'm playing Diablo and have nothing else running this GPU runs at these clocks. My other rig, vanilla 780, 2600k, and D3 running from an SSD, seems to average below 60FPS. When running just D3, the GPU runs at idle clocks, somewhere around 800MHz. The 780 also has a modded BIOS and I've been using NVIDIA Inspector + batch files to force the card to run at max clocks (1070MHz on the core and around 7GHz on the mem.)

Wondering if anyone can help me figure out why my 670, with 1000 less cuda cores, although at a higher core clock, is crushing my 780. Thanks for any and all input.

Edit: both machines run at 1080p. Also, my 780 runs 3 monitors, however I only game on one. The 670 is never hooked up to more than one monitor.

there has got to be some setting you are missing. That has to be impossible!

unless just try having 1 monitor plugged into the 780 probably won't mattter but wirth a shot

I'd try to play on the 780 machine using one monitor (even though you're only using one for the game).

Other than that I would try a complete wipe and reinstall of the latest drivers for the 780 machine. Something is SERIOUSLY wrong here or you have 32xAA on and don't know it (which I've done before tongue.gif).

or supertexture or something like that.. maybe vsync is enabled
I remember doing that in diablo 3 as well though

Gpu usage?both are under the same os?

Not sure about GPU usage for the 670, but the 780 is only at about 55% in-game. The clocks are at 785MHz and the memory load stays under 15%. All of my video settings are at the highest options and my foreground and background FPS is set to 200. I know that game isn't terribly hard to run, but my 780 seems to be shrugging it off. I tried to go into my NVIDIA control panel and change some settings for D3 but that didn't really do anything either.

Try disabling hyperthreading on your 2600 and rebench. It could be assigning a thread to a hyperthreaded thread which would not feed the gpu properly.

Edit: You should also be able to do this by setting cpu affinity to threads 0 and 2 in task manager. (open diablo, open task manager, right click on diablo.exe process, click affinity and make sure only 0 and 2 are clicked.

Try setting the 780 to prefer "single display performance mode" and "prefer maximum performance" if they aren't set already.

I have tried all of these suggestions. I set the global settings to single-display performance and several other settings. I have also set D3 to run on the even-numbered cores. The usage doesn't seem to increase but the core clock and memory clock seem to be running at or close to max. My BF3 performance seems on par for a single 780. Getting around 100FPS. Guess the game really just isn't enough of a load for the 780 to break a sweat.

Do you have adaptive vsync forced on through the Nvidia control panel in 3D settings?
