Single-Core Performance with High Memory

Thread Starter
My current PC has a i7-920 with 18GB memory and I use it for everything now. I'm looking to build a second PC now for just school/work/high-cpu stuff.

I'm not really up to date on current parts. I'd prefer something that doesn't limit the amount of memory I can add to the motherboard too (LGA1150 seems to only have 2/4 slots).

So I think I'll be using a LGA2011 board with either a i7-4820K (quad-core @ 3.7 GHz) or a i7-4930K (hex-core @ 3.4 GHz). The two extra cores might be better with lower core speed, but that's still undecided.

Are these my best options currently? And is there anything better just in the horizon that's worth waiting for? I'm in no rush so I can wait.

X99 and Haswell-E are arriving later this year, but they'll use DDR4 only and, in many cases, it actually looks like a step back from X79. For example, it's quad-channel but only one DIMM per channel as opposed to X79's two DIMMs per channel. However, DDR4 should be launching with 16GB DIMMs, at least I think. DDR4's launch prices will be, I predict, highway robbery given RAM's current pricing. Maximum feasible capacity from X79 to X99 should not change, but price definitely will.

If you need/want all of the RAM, then X79 and really any CPU will be fine. Intel hasn't had huge leaps and bounds since Sandy Bridge and a 3000 (Ivy and Sandy-E) series chip to a 4000 (Haswell and Ivy-E) series chip is a negligible at best upgrade. Get a 4930k and you're set. Get a 4820k or used Sandy-E to save some cash. I can't tell you if you need the four extra threads. If your 920 is sufficient, then a 4820k's higher clockspeed and better IPCs will make it that much faster. If you need better multithreaded performance, then a hexacore chip will be a godsend.

I would wait for now. We still don't have too many details about Haswell-E other than an octacore enthusiast chip existing and its exclusive use of DDR4, which does not have many details itself. Plus you always have the opportunity to snag somebody's old platform for relatively cheap when they upgrade to the latest and greatest.
