Raid 1 set up.

Thread Starter
Hi guys I am wanting to set up a raid 1 array with 2x 1TB WD red drives. I will be using the on-board controller (ASUS P8 Z77-V) and I have a few questions.

Do both HDD's have to be in the same bank of SATA ports?
Can I only use the Intel ports?
In the future can I add 2x more drives?
Do I just turn it on in the bios then install Intel RST?

Thanks guys

Do both HDD's have to be in the same bank of SATA ports?

Same bank of SATA ports may not be required but would be recommended. Main factor to consider is whether or not the RAID setup can see both hard drives. If it can then which SATA ports they're on doesn't really matter if it works (though I would use the same bank just to be sure).

Can I only use the Intel ports?

Depends on which controller has RAID support. If only the Northbridge (i.e. Intel) supports RAID then yes...if any other controllers (say like Marvell) support RAID then you can use those. I would go with Intel anyways just for reliability and performance (secondary controllers usually don't work nearly as well as the native/Intel ones do).

In the future can I add 2x more drives?

Only if you want to break RAID and reconfigure the whole thing.

Do I just turn it on in the bios then install Intel RST?

Just turn it on in the BIOS/RAID setup...software isn't required at all as it's all done through the RAID controller but I'll leave that decision to you (shouldn't matter either way).

Hope this helps some! thumb.gif

Intel® Z77 chipset :
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), gray
4 x SATA 3Gb/s port(s), blue
Support Raid 0, 1, 5, 10
Supports Intel® Smart Response Technology, Intel® Rapid Start Technology, Intel® Smart Connect Technology
ASMedia® PCIe SATA controller : *6
2 x SATA 6Gb/s port(s), navy blue

This is the info from the ASUS website, I already have my ssd plugged into the 6Gbps sata navy blue port so I could use the 2x intel grey 6Gbps ports for the raid 1 array.

On a side note would there be much difference between the 3Gbps ports and the 6Gbps since the HDD's and SSD can not read or write at 6Gbps?

Thanks for your help so far thumb.gif

Also thinking Storage Spaces in windows 8 might be a good option
