Check out what I picked up today!

Not really looking for one, but I lucked into the exact server cabinet I wanted (by exact I mean size and features) found on CL.

A local bank closed down, and they had 5 of these but I only bought 1, since that's all I needed. This is an old server rack (circa pre-2000) made by Racal-Datacom, but has the following for dimensions:

Outside
~43" Tall
~31" Deep
~23" Wide

Inside (mountable/usable dimensions)
~38-40" Tall
~29" Deep (front rack to rear rack)
19+ Wide (standard width)

It is a full enclosed cabinet, 2 locking doors (one on the front and one on the rear). The front door has a black/smoked plexi-glass, while the rear is a solid door with 3 exhaust fans mounted. It came with the keys and the locks are in great working condition. It's a little dirty (been sitting in a barn for a few weeks), but is exactly what I wanted. I believe it's 22U inside, but it may be 20U. I know it's bigger than 18U, but no bigger than 22U bit it should suffice.

Worthless Without Pics! (Click to show)

Wonder what it cost me? A cool $80!!!

Wow, that's a nice size cabinet! All of the ones on CL here are nearly 7 feet tall!!!
For $80, that's quite a deal. Congrats on the awesome buy. biggrin.gif I'm in the market for something similar to that, perhaps even a tad smaller.

The guy has 4 more, but you'd have to come to rural KY, haha. I wasn't in the market for one, but it's exactly what I wanted and I expected to pay $400+ for it when I was ready for it.

Oh yeah, I'm also selling my Dell C1100 (dual Xeon L5520 and 48GB RAM) for $650 to a local guy (I've got ~$400 invested in it) and ordered a Dell R610 (dual L5520, 24GB RAM) today for under $500. I'll add a little RAM to it to get it up to 32GB, and eventually get a second. The R610 has quad onboard gigabit NICs, dual PSUs, 2 PCIe slots, and is more aesthetically pleasing. Will looking great in my new cabinet!

I almost got a server board with quad nics and a q6600 2 weeks ago, but moved too slow on it. I'm just starting to get into the server world, so I guess I don't need it to start out. lol

Yeah, they are expensive! I was planning to pay over $400 of something identical (but less solid, as this thing is like a tank!) but got really, really lucky.

Before getting this, I was looking at the OmniMount RE18 and the Tripp Lite SR18UB, or something similar (maybe the 22U models)
Yea those are ideal size for me. I don't see myself needing anything more than a 12u honestly, but an 18u wouldn't be bad. But still, trying to find a full depth cabinet for cheap is next to impossible. Although I can find 42u racks for a couple hundred bucks easy locally. It's just the smaller ones that are hard to find cheap. Even that OmniMount is only 23" deep so servers would have to hang out the back. I would prefer a full enclosure like you have so that will cut down on noise as well.

I previously had a 46U rack (not cabinet) I got from CL for $100. Full size racks are common, and cheap. Full size cabinets are also somewhat common around here, usually costing $200-250. Smaller ones are so uncommon, and usually overpriced. I got lucky that the owner of these 5 racks was an auction company who bought out everything in the building when a local bank closed. It's a shame mine will sit for a while before I actually need to use it.

Yea I just found someone selling an APC Netshelter half size cabinet. It is still a beast @ 47" tall, but cant complain for $200. I am trying to see if I really want that thing or wait for something smaller.

Well I ended up buying the APC Netshelter. It is in great condition. The sides and doors front and back come off, and it has 4 fans on the top and the 4 casters make it easy to move. At 47" tall, 34" deep, 23" wide, it is really large. Wife wasn't the happiest.redface.gif Now to fill it with the equipment. thumb.gif
