Fx 4100 stuck @ 4.6Ghz - Page 2

The Crucial Ballistix stick is 1333mhz memory at 9-9-9-24 while the Kingston Value Ram is 1600mhz at 11-11-11-33, but should run fine at 1333mhz 9-9-9-27. http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/KVR16N11S8_4.pdf
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239312

I would set your ram in bios to 1333 mhz and use 9 for your CAS Latency (CL), and use 9 for your RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD), and use 9 as your RAS# Precharge (tRP) and use 33 as your Cycle Time (tRAS) and use 41 as your Bank Cycle Time (tRC). I would also up the dram voltage a bit to 1.55 volts.

Why not do it the other way. Instead of under-clockling the Balistix, overclock the Kingston?

That would be the next thing to try, after he can verify stability. The ballistix should be able to do 11-11-11 at 1600mhz, but thats not a given, especially with mixed ram.

Done it for the RAM But et isn't more stable at 4.7 :/
post #15 of 27
I noticed in the picture above youre using 225 fsb, try going to 4.7 ghz with a 200 fsb. (you really need fairly good ram for fsb overclocking) Also, just try one stick of ram at a time and see if stability and overclockability improves.

Also in prime95, which are the workers that fail first ?

I would generally expect a little bit more speed from a FX-4100, but all chips are slightly different. Its the luck of the chip lottery.
If youre stuck at 4.6 ghz even at 1.55 vcore, then I would try the ballistix stick at 1600 mhz, 225 fsb and test for stability. It will give a bit more performance for the mhz, so if you cant get more speed then at least try to optimize for performance. smile.gif

I would set your ram in bios to 1600 mhz and use 11 for your CAS Latency (CL), and use 11 for your RAS# to CAS# Delay (tRCD), and use 11 as your RAS# Precharge (tRP) and use 33 as your Cycle Time (tRAS) and use 47 as your Bank Cycle Time (tRC). I would also up the dram voltage a bit to 1.55 volts.

Oh, and I would put my finger on the metal heatspreader of the ballistix ram while running prime95 to see how warm it is. It should be warm, but not hot.

Wait a minute, I just noticed you got the chips backwards, heh. But I got your basic meaning anyway. tongue.gif

i was afraid to go until 1.55 Vcore but indeed et look like stable @ 4.7 biggrin.gif (fsb @ 200 RAM @ 1333 + firts timings you advice me ) but vcore ils too High for a 24/7 using right? Even with good cooling? For improving RAM, i will try this later.
Btw, THX for helping me guys smile.gif

EDIT: the first and second core fail first at prime 95

EDIT2: I've tried RAM @1600, it work with a 9-9-9-24-32 timing but not at 11-11-11-33-47

EDIT3 (the last tongue.gif): about the HT link, had i too let it on auto or putting at the same as FSB?

1.55v is the maximum VID on these chips, which means the maximum amount AMD will set on the chips they ship out. But as far as I can tell, it looks like they only ship out chips in the 1.25 to 1.35 VID range. And it looks like about 1.75 volts will fry the chip. A lot of people will say that temps are more important than the vcore.
For 24/7 use, unless youre doing something that requires full processor intensity, enable CnC and C6 in bios, after you make sure your system is stable. (youll need to set voltages to offset mode) With CnC enabled and surfing the web or other light tasks, vcore will go down to like 1.1 and youll save a good 25 watts on electricity.

Ewe, most fail on the last set of cores, 3rd and 4th cores in your case. Sorry to say, it looks like you didnt hit the cpu lottery. frown.gif But performance at 4.7ghz is much much better than at stock, and its probably not worth getting a new cpu or new ram for just another couple of more mhz in speed.

Thats odd, but you have a decent mobo with the 990 chipset.

I find with fsb overclocking, setting the HT and NB to the same speed gives me a bit better stability. YMMV.

I've actually had more success with FX chips by raising the bus clock than just doing straight multiplier. The 4.85 GHz on my 8350 is actually 231*21; the chip won't even make 4.8 at that voltage doing 200*24.

Yep, as long as you can boot up and submit a valid cpu-z with your name for that chip. biggrin.gif
