580 vs 7850 overclocked and crossfire 1440p gaming

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
I recently was faced with a dilemma of which card to pick, a MSI 580 lightning xtreme 3gb, a single MSI 7850 2gb card or crossfire 7850s. So naturally I opened a thread asking people's advice, which can be found here. http://www.overclock.net/t/1473385/7850-crossfire-or-580-lightning-extreme-3gb-for-1440p

I just wanted to post my benchmarking results in case it helps anyone else out. thumb.gif
My rig is an i5 2550k stock clocks 3.4ghz
8gb ram
Which is all that's really important.
I ran two benchmarks including bioshock infinite as a stable single player benchmark with no variables. Then I decided to do some real world multiplayer benchmarks in battlefield 3 multiplayer on Caspian Border, same map/server each time. Due to the crazy amount of variation in multiplayer gameplay, take these values with a grain of salt, as a general guideline.

Bioshock 1440p Ultra DX 11 @ 2560x1440p

Multiplayer BF3 Caspian Border Ultra NO Motion Blur and MSAA @ 2560x1440p

*NOTE*
In BF3 my i5 2550k at stock was bottlenecking both the 580 overclocked and 7850 overclocked and crossfire.
The 580 at 850mhz was getting 95-98% GPU usage
The 580 at 950/2200/1.25V was getting 90%ish GPU usage (also it was very loud)
I forgot to check 7850 gpu usage but it was obviously being bottle necked too.

Overclocked settings are labeled in the excel screenshot but it's:
7850
stock=900mhz
overclocked in crossfire =1050/1450
overclocked single card 1150/1450/1.2v

580
stock=772/2000
580 stock voltage 850/2000
580 950/2200/1.25v

Thanks OCN for all the help in everything and I hope this will help some ppl out too. thumb.gif
Any questions/comments/suggestion feel free to leave them.

Neither went above or even close to 2gb of Vram usage. In Battlefield I had MSAA off. If I remember correctly the 580 got to 1.6gb Vram usage.

Unfortunately I only have Crysis 2 and it's not installed. Pretty lazy at the moment but eventually I might benchmark some more games.

GTX 580 looks like a hair faster in Bioshock, but that game has always been problematic for AMD cards when DDOF is enabled on them, they take more performance hit than their Nvidia counterparts.
With the BF3 test the 580 @ 950 MHz is slower than when @ 850 MHz. As you've said the multiplayer mode is the reason for this inconstancy.
