I played Mass Effect 2 first because I didnt have a gaming PC at that time and the first was PC and Xbox only, I was gutted at the time I couldn't play it, PSU blew up on my old system not long before it released IIRC. As I say I put a fair bit of time into the 2nd and quite enjoyed it. Maybe I will give 1 a chance, but I heard bad things about 3 when it released?

I didn't consider Fallout: New Vegas before because I had Fallout 3 and although I played it quite a lot I never finished it. Is New Vegas a little more linear? I felt the plot got lost in Fallout 3 there was just to much else going on like it was almost TO big. Having said that I liked all the ES games although they had the same 'problem', I did say I was strange in the OP redface.gif

I'll look into the others, cheers ! thumb.gif

Edit: Lot of Mass Effect love here, I'm being swayed.

Game of Thrones, the 2012 RPG. It's not just underrated, it's obscure. Still, it has the best plot I've ever encountered in a computer game (and the top -critic, not user- score on metacritic is actually mine biggrin.gif )

Massively excited by this, don't know how long though and I'm probably setting myself up for a let down.

Assuming you played 2, ME3 is great right up until the very end, where some manager forced a dev to hash out a quick ending. The extended cut DLC fleshes out the ending, the Leviathan DLC gives a... certain character... some much needed background, plus the ME3 happy ending mod helps too. Ignore what your heard, but I HIGHLY suggest you read up on ME1's story and edit your ME2 save to your taste if you don't want to play ME1.

There's a lot of conflict over FO3 vs NV, but the general consensus seems to be that NV's quests are indeed more structured and connected, while FO3 has more/better environmental details. Some people like NV better, I liked 3 more.

I think you'll really like Bastion (I certainly did). Other than that, my go to story driven suggestions would be Psychonauts and Cave Story.
The story for Cave Story (heh) is a bit deeper, but Psychonauts has got your quirky fix. I think it's easy to fall in love with both.

^ Pretty much this. It's absolutely necessary to play ME1, import the save game into ME2, and then import again to ME3 in my opinion. All of the DLC for ME2 and ME3 is necessary, especially to clear up ME3's ending.

I'm on a similar page as you, being someone who has actually read novels before and pays attention to the writing of movies. So I get a good laugh when people recommend Far Cry 3, Tomb Raider, Dead Space, Skyrim, and similar games in discussions like these. Most gamers just don't seem to have any idea what goes into a story, it seems people will just recommend whatever single player games they enjoyed.

I see that you found Torment: Tides of Numenera, I'm also eager for that game though it's a shame it will be isometric 2.5D and point-and-click only... this really harms immersion especially in story driven games. Though I agree that Planescape: Torment is just in a totally different league than other games, it's truly an interactive novel. Silent Hill 2 is up there as well, but good luck obtaining it.

Fallout: New Vegas is not more linear than Fallout 3. But unlike Fallout 3, New Vegas has excellent writing. Get Ultimate Edition, since the DLCs combined really add to it. It has some of the writers from the first two Fallout games, which were made by Black Isle Studios. This studio also made Planescape: Torment so maybe they have some of the same writers? Even if they don't, New Vegas is a must-have. Using mods like these is highly encouraged, especially since New Vegas doesn't have the most exciting world design without mods.

The Elder Scrolls is right next to Fallout 3; they have the most detailed open worlds ever made, with an endless amount of content, but little emphasis on the story or characters (Skyrim having the least story focus of them all). New Vegas on the other hand focuses strongly on the writing and several characters.

I will go for ME1 as well. I have played it probably 3 or 4 times. I thought 2 was amazing was just let down by the lack of weapons.

Since you mentioned FF7/10 I would also throw in Chrono trigger. It is the best story game ever in my opinion. Its a SNES game that was in one of the FF anthology discs. If you can find it I would suggest playing it. Best characters ever in an RPG. Frog and ayala are awesome.

Yup, ME is very rewarding if you play it all the way through with DLCs.

Oblivion/Morrowind did have more character emphasis than Skyrim.

Chrono Trigger is a great game they also made a ds version. I will throw in some games gothic 1,2,3, risen 1&2, the last remnant, and finally the original deus ex.
