DVI-D to VGA Converter?

Thread Starter
I inherited an BNIB Apple Cinema HD 23 display for free, and would like to put it to use on my wife's laptop as a second display when she is at her desk. I rapidly discovered a regular run of the mill DVI/VGA converter won't do the trick, and while the computer will detect and configure the monitor it does not display anything. I verified that the display does work on a desktop of mine. I've searched around a bit on the internet and I have found a massive amount of bad information out there regarding the use of a DVI-D display via a VGA port. Some say use a "converter", others advertise DVI-D to VGA cables, but I haven't found anything definitive.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me? I'm not looking to break the bank, I just want to put this free display to work.

DVI-D is digital DVI. You cannot passively convert that to a analogue VGA. A converter is a few hundred dollars.

Are you sure you have a DVI-D port and not a DVI-I port? DVI-I supports both DVI-D (digital) and DVI-A (analogue)? If you have DVI-I or DVI-A (I don't think any common device has this), conversion is not needed just an plug adapter.

Here is what the cable from the display looks like:

DVI-D Single Link.

I connected it to my desktop to verify functionality. The external display port on my wife's laptop is VGA.

Oh..... you want a VGA to DVD-D converter. It's not worth it at $133: http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=101&cp_id=10114&cs_id=1011401&p_id=8214&seq=1&format=2

For that price, you are better off saving the money towards a new laptop since I can assume her current one is probably 3+ years old.

Hmm. Would it be possible to go DVI-D to HDMI? I've read that they are both interchangeable. Her laptop has an HDMI port as well but her current display is connected via this port. However her current display can be connected VGA as it has VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs on it.

Thanks for all of your help!

i believe that will work. they're both digital signals, so you just need a cable and not an active convertor (experts, please correct me if i'm wrong). however, you won't have any sound from the HDMI-out port of the computer.

Then do that then.

DVI-D to HDMI just requires <$5 cable. (Note that getting sound may or may not be possible but you just need it for video.)
