Godaddy throttles our site

Thread Starter
Hello!

So we need about 1-5gb of data to be downloaded from our site each day (private modded minecraft server, each user downloads 250mb) and godaddy crashes us if we use just 1-2gb a day. When people download the files on our launcher it gets to 40-50% then it stops and our site goes down for 5-10 mins. Is there a host that will allow us to use 1-5gb each day? We pay 5 bucks a month now for economy hosting on godaddy (we payed for a year) frown.gif Thanks. smile.gif

Hosthorde! Seriously, since I've discovered them a couple years ago, I have never looked at any other managed minecraft servers. And I've been around to a lot of them haha!

Check them out! Hosthorde.com

$25 gives you unlimited everything. I believe they start you out at 10 GB of space, I guess to the fair use..but if you need more space just send a ticket. I think the most RAM they allocate would be 16 GB's..but that just depends on each person's needs. Then again, if you need more then you just might need to go dedicated anyways. Excellent service! No downtime and custom .jars! thumb.gif

Ah thanks. We will host our server on a server box in my house, so we only need a host to upload our modpack files. I don't want to use my network for people to download it hehe.

I thought dropbox only allowed 2gb of data to be shared a day as a free user but according to a forum post they say you can share 10gb a day as a free user? redface.gif
If this is the case then that would be perfect. biggrin.gif

Doesn't seem like I can use dropbox since the launcher needs a static path to each folder like this: www.website.com/objects/00/32/54 etc. With dropbox the links change from each time you move 1 folder in. Need a host with a domain that offers 5gb of traffic a day at the cheapest price possible hehe. Otherwise I would have to set up a web server at home but that's not ideal for me as I need the line for servers.

Buy a cheap VPS and do it all yourself smile.gif

I can assist with setting up various web servers from Apache to nginx to lighthttpd.

Huh. What about google drive? I guess the same deal. I uploaded everything on Dropbox. Why don't you do something like putting your modpack on the ATLauncher? I realize that you'll still need to host the files itself. I am pretty sure Dropbox will work.

We are using skcraft's launcher which we think is a lot better and following his guide here: http://confluence.skcraft.com/display/LAUN/Generating+a+Package+Manifest

A java command turns the mods config etc into a manifest.json (tells where the objects folder is) and an objects folder. Inside this folder is another 700 folders.

I am able to tell the launcher where the .json files are by adding a "?dl=1" at the end of the links, but when I try to tell the manifest.json where the objects folder is it finds the folder, but it cant go inside it since links change once you do, www.dropboxexample.com/sddsdsd/objects then turns into www.dropboxexample.com/445345345345323/objects/nextFolder.

Like he says in his guide:
Publishing your package:
Upload your dist/ folder (the contents, not the dist folder itself) to http://example.com/modpack/
Upload the libraries folder to http://example.com/modpack/libraries/ (or to wherever you put them).

Looks like a VPS might be what we need yeah. I guess pretty much all we have to do is find a VPS that has the bandwith requirements we need and setup a linux server on it.

You should piss it in and pretty cheaply too. 5GB a day = about 150GB a month. nuovawebs (http://nuovawebs.com/vps-servers/) are basically handing them out for free.

They run on desktop hardware (i.e. i7 rather than Xeon) and use OpenVZ but that's why they are cheap and you don't need enterpise-y for what you are going to do anyway smile.gif Their cheapest plan gives you 300GB a month in traffic. But I'd probably go for the next one for a few bucks more, get a 3 IP addresses and 1TB bandwidth per month in traffic. Disk space could be an issue though.
