SLI 880's? Think 2700K @ 5ghz will be much of a bottleneck factor?

I'm definitely going to be upgrading my SLI GTX670's to the new 880 cards when they are released.

But I'm really not all that keen on upgrading my main machine as it still functions perfectly for everything I do from work stuff to games, etc.

So how much of a bottleneck factor would my sig system be, if at all and with two 880's in SLI?

Thanks for any input ... tough question, I know as the cards are only speculative at this point ...

I don't think a 2700k at 5 GHz will bottleneck 880 in sli. The closes card that matches 880 in performance would probably be a 780ti which I never heard of 780ti in sli getting a bottleneck.

Same as last year, titan came out to outperform the 680 but later on it is the same power as the 780. So I guess same with 880.

Just to share some of my experience with a 3930k and 2x Titans in SLI, I used to get an increase in FPS in a Unigine valley benchmark when going from 4.6 GHz to 5GHz so I think in that case the cpu was creating somewhat of a bottleneck.

Personally if I had money to buy 2x 880, I would certainly get at least a 6 core processor to push them.

Depends on the situation.
In MMOs, your SLI'd 880s will likely not be used to their full potential, and that would be a CPU Bottleneck.

You'd still likely be running at over a few hundred FPS, though, so the bottleneck wouldn't be a problem. (Would exist, though. They always do)

It really depends on the resolution, settings, and games in which you play. Not to mention the 880 is completely unknown atm.

I can only speculate, but I would have a hard time seeing that it would bottleneck that setup.

Until we see hard evidence about the Maxwell cards, no one can give a legitimate answer.

I'll eventually upgrade to x99 but want to wait a bit. And this build has been so freakishly outstanding over the past 2.5 years I've been running it...as in just FLAWLESS...that it kills me to think about touching it. LOL ...

Same install of Win 7 for 2.5 years and nary a hiccup/issue ... thanks in large part to a solid disc imaging solution ...

But going to get the cards first for sure and later upgrade the mb/cpu/ram ...

Thanks for the comments btw.

thats because bottleneck is very subjective. in certain benches/game like valley, it will increase minimum frames having a strong cpu overclocked very high. to some that is a bottleneck improvement, others might not consider a bottleneck unless the cpu is crippling the gpu's extensively.

Bottleneck? Sure probably there is one, what I worry about is that burning hole that will be left in your wallet after buying not one but two high end graphics cards! smile.gif

Haha the performance of high end cards compared to everything else is probably why no one complains about a bottleneck, even if it existed the gains in performance from the card overshadows whatever bottleneck there is for most people! Example: person gets a 780ti and has huge fps gains plus details AA ect, he's not gonna worry about the last 2,5,10 or whatever they are losing from a cpu bottleneck.
