i only install games on it, but i haven't done that in a while, i usually store all my files on my portable drive, other than that...i did a c: cleanup yesterday which included the windows update files..all in all it did free up an extra 1GB of space..but today the drive is down to 4GB of usable space

Could be temporary files for something...open Windows Explorer and run the disk cleanup and see how much it finds in the temporary stuff.

thank you so much for the suggestion, it turns out i was accidentally pressing the Fraps shortcut of recording movies while i was playing Thief 4..

i ended up with 55GBs of thief gameplay footage...anyone interested?

Have you tried either of the mentioned programs? Both will show you exactly what folders and files are taking up the space. If there's any one file or folder that's out of place it should stand out pretty clearly.

Damn ninjas

I did the exact same thing with Skyrim, I would wonder why the yellow fps would turn red every now and then, thought nothing of it till I ran out HDD space and I am like What The Hell?!?!

I had so much footage of walking back and forth from whiterun

i did a lot of level saving/reloading since thief is stealth based but F9 for level loading happens to be used in FRAPS too for gameplay recording

that caused my FPS to be all over the place..go figure

i never found the need to defrag when i moved to windows 7, but i should've done some disc clean up..i think
