They knew what they were doing buddy. Stop exaggerating the DS team's incompetence. First PC game....pffft. These were, like you said, day one fixes by the modding community and al lot of them were done in a matter of minutes.

That dev team could have if they were allowed to by the publisher.

So what I'm reading from that quote was people were demanding a straight port fast and they didn't have enough time to do that. What is your point? This is why developers like to stay clear from PC and focus on consoles because you have whiners who complain about the smallest things.

I see your point and fully agree with it.

With that being said, From Software said from the start, that they were unsure of the quality of the port. They didn't know if they had the time, money, experience or even if they wanted to bother with it at all.

From: You guys sure?
Community: YES!
From: We probably aren't going to put a lot of work into it.
Community: We don't care. Get the thing running on pc and give us .ini files.
From: Ok.
Community: Man this thing needs some work.
From: You said just get it running.
Community: Yes we did, thanks From.
From: So DS2 with PC in mind?
Community: ZOMG YES PL0X!!!!

My point. We knew what we were getting. The petition drive really didnt care. Hard to build a gfx engine from scratch and port the assets to pc. the rest can be done by the community

that community you speak of does not encompass the entire pc gaming community. A petition doesnt mean that everyone who purchased the game for pc was aware of these problems prior to their purchase.

Im sure adding these features that were done in a day by modding community would have required monumental resources and time.rolleyes.gif

So the whole point is that basically console gamers are mad because it was shown off running PC features no? So now they know what it's like having features and potential taken away? Because that's what's happened to the PC community for years with console lead platform games, DLC, no dedicated servers, unfinished games(BF3/4).

And besides do you think a petition basically asking for a direct port is doing any favors for the pc community? While we are on that road already of getting console ports, accepting it and saying this is what you want or are willing to put up with doesnt help pc and its current place/status in the gaming industry.

Durante, the guy behind DSfix, got it running under a day since he already knew of to do. We are speaking of a developer with ABSOLUTELY NO EXPERIENCE at making PC games. For them it was nearly gambling since for a lot of these devs the PC market is never considered. They gave us a chance, people bought the game. Yes, they could have asked modders to implement DSfix's solution straight in the game, but they were already making DS2 and couldn't afford splitting the team. Heck, if I remember they literally outsourced the port so it wouldn't take too long to finalize.

Modders already knew what to do, and they didn't. Sometimes, no mater your talent, you can't know everything. Best example would be asking a master of woodworking to make a steel desk with the same quality as his wooden offering on his 1st try.

You act as if From Software did the PC community a service by pushing out a broken game and refusing to fix it when the fixes are known. They did not do the PC community a service. They took the money and ran. If they actually cared about the game and the community they would have at the very least incorporated the modded fix into their official build. If they really cared they would have compensated the person who fixed their broken game. They did neither. They took the money and ran.

ugh. "ported" and "outsouced"....two words I hate to see/hear when referencing pc games. It usually indicates the game did not get its due attention because there were more important projects to devote resources...but lets still go ahead and release an unfinished game, make a quick buck and let the customers take care of the rest.

Reminds me of the acm disaster when gearbox outsourced the game. Granted, acm was a hell of a lot worse than DS in every way imaginable. But it just shows the lack of care when they hand the project off to quickly finalize it in much less capable hands.

The ironic thing is that in the case of Colonial marines all thous awesome graphics that where demoed where made by TimeGate the developer that GearBox outsourced to. The instructions TimeGate got was to make it awesome and not to worry about the console power target. Well then when TimeGate handed over their work GearBox crapped their pants as they realized they could not get what TimeGate had made to run on the consoles. So they ripped out huge amounts stuff and tried to rebuild the game in less then a year and so unsurprisingly the end result was utter crap.

Outsourcing when done correctly is fine and many good games and ports have been out sourced. The metal gear hd collection was outsourced for example and that turned out fine.

Really in the case of Dark souls 1 the issue was rather that they didn't outsource it. They could have outsourced the porting job to an developer with the needed expertise instead of trying to do it them selves when they clearly did not have the know-how to do it right.
