Unboxing my upgrades. Muahahahahahaha!

Thread Starter
Oh yes do i have me some upgrades. A friend of mine had some spare gear and threw them my way as I'd get more use out of them than he would.
Heres the pics, and the specs of just what it is that i got are at the bottom.

A box! I wonder whats inside?

Foam and anti-static bags! Just what I have always wanted.

Appears to be a motherboard. Lets pull more crap out and see.

Oooh, 4GB set of Gskill Ripjaws.

And the OTHER 4GB set of Ripjaws

Opening the big bag and pulling out the contents reveals: A biostar x79 motherboard w/ a CPU already installed!

The scribble on the IHS is "E5-2690". A quick CPU-world.com reveals this particular CPU has 8c/16th, clocks at 2.9Ghz base and single core turbo's all the way up to 3.8ghz. Very very nice.

Turns out there was something else in the box as well. Namely this graphics card.

And the whole pile of goodies plugged into each other, ready to go.

Now, you might be wondering: How much did he spend on this? $1000? $2000? $3000?
None. It was a freebie. biggrin.gif

Parts are:
E5-2690 2.9ghz (8c/16t 3.8ghz single core turbo, 3.3ghz all core turbo)
8GB Gskill Ripjaws DDR3-1600mhz
Biostar TPower X79
Nvidia Tesla m2050 (GTX 470 w/ more DP float and no video out. Crunching card!)

Now, to make the Leviathan a reality. devil.gif

Awesome, what a dumpster diving dude he is. thumb.gif

That should run irc and your browser quite well!

Are you going to use your Corsair H50 on that? I'm curious on the temps of a cpu like that used in a desktop application. biggrin.gif

He's not a dumpster diver. Working with ultra-high end hardware is what he does for a living. Out of respect for him, I will not say anymore.

I tried to get my H50 on it but mine is an old model and while the screws can reach the socket screw-holes, they are physically too small to engage the threads. On the otherhand though, I stuck my Xigmatek Gaia on it and will be powering it up for the first time in my possession here shortly.

Running quite cool actually. The highest peak power I've seen was just shy of 150W, and that is nowhere near enough to blow VRMs even crap ones. At least this isnt an MSI motherboard. THEN I'd be worrying.
Hell, I've done more than double that with my bedside Rig's Phenom II running @ 3.6ghz 1.5v and it took 2 months before the power plug burned from the current. The vrms themselves (3+1 phase, not sinked but actively cooled by a fan right on top of them) shrugged it off.

Then there's the fact the previous owner of this board used it for testing just about every LGA 2011 CPU that would fit in it, including 12 core IB-E monsters.
Considering how well the VRMs on this board are going to be cooled once its installed in my case (2x 120mm fans directly above them exhausting out), I would have to be doing something INCREDIBLY stupid to burn them.

Anyways, just completed one frame in F@H using 4 threads, 12:58 TPF @ 3.3ghz, 12k PPD on the dot. As it stands right now this CPU even running far below its capabilities its the most productive piece of hardware I have ever owned for F@H in terms of flat out PPD.

Haha, yeah I know who he is and is responsible for a good bit of PPD on that team.
That machine has a lot of potential, treat it well!

Once you get it all buttoned up and set up in your main build most of us will like some more bench results and even a few more blurry pictures with old timestamps. biggrin.gif

Oh hell yeah I'm gonna do some benchies. Gotta put this puppy through its paces w/ a proper GPU to back it up instead of this GT430 crap card.
As for the super blurry pics with bad timestamps, I was using the crap camera at the time. And my case is a bit of a disaster when it comes to cable management at the moment.

Anyways, here's my list of benchmarks that I'll be doing
3dMark 01, 03, 05, Vantage
The passmark Performance Test suite.
The Aida64 Test Suite.
A long list of gaming Benchmarks including:
-Unreal Tournament Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Map: MH-The_SunspireV2 (its the largest map i personally know of, being some 23,000 unreal-units high from the 0 point on the z axis. Its about 2.3km high and pushes the limits of what the game is capable of rendering.
4 tests:
Straight render test: Stand on the top of the wall in front of the spawn area, look up to the top of the map, switch to 800x600 windowed mode for software rendering, measure framerate.
Cybot Render Test: Place 20 Cybots on the wall in front of the spawn area, trigger the gasbag spawning, measure framerate. Done w/ Hardware rendering. Same for the following 2 tests.
Nuke Render test: Launch Lv4 nuke at top of map, measure lowest framerate during detonation.
Ultimaprotos Oversurrection Render Test: Pull out Oversurrector, Select UltimaProtos, Fire oversurrector to top of map, measure framerate during entire sequence. (FYI: I didnt come up with the names or make the mod. And i do believe this particular oversurrection is the most spectacular superweapon i have ever seen in a videogame, and the most powerful, considering it kills everything on the map that is not you or your team.) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
-Dolphin Emulator Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
2 Tests:
F-zero GX: Aeropolis-Multiplex Time Trial. Set replay, measure framerate during replay.
Extreme G III: Siris Canyon Time Trials, 1500G engine. Measure framerate throughout the race.
-Audiosurf
--Lemon - We cant Fly (Solarstone Pure Remix) (Free-ride mode)
-Kerbal Space Program
--View Minmus Surface base for 30 seconds, measure framerate.
And Cinebench, all of them, all tests.

Im gonna be a bit busy today.

Edit: Q9400 baseline benchmarks are complete. Time to swap and have at it. biggrin.gif

Hardware swap complete, busy running benchmarks now.

Interesting note: Apparently OpenGL is either CPU limited or Bus limited, as my OpenGL performance has nearly doubled, either from running the GPU on full x16 bandwidth, or just having a better CPU backing it up.
