I will do tomorrow a comparison

Bit simplified render chain:

CPU generates wireframe > Data are stored in L3 cache and then sent to GPU > Wireframe is textured, shaders applied and displayed.

Following is only speculation:
a) Mantle do things on CPU more simple. CPU utilization is then lower.
b) Size in bytes of generated wireframe is smaller with mantle.

Anyways both of these factors can act as "Lower CPU overhead" with mantle. According few info i heard on some "Starswarm demo sessions" was claimed that multiple objects are rendered at once if they share same model. Basically it means that CPU has to sent data of one 3d model once per render instead of 30 per render (considering ships in starswarm). It automatically means lower CPU utilization and also less data to transfer from CPU to GPU (throught L3 cache, northbridge, and PCI-E interface).

In this case if CPU utilization can affect PC stability, we have a side effects:
1. Better system stability when using Mantle
2. Lower power consumption.
3. Theoretically higher possible OC.

Higher Possible OC is however only "virtual" gain. If you tune your CPU according to mantle-optimized game, system may get unstable when using other stress tests or DX games...

I havent expected this kind of benefits, but when you mentioned OC... I need to verify it on real game... If its true Mantle is even better as I expected...

Can you comment on the 14.4 betas review websites are using to test the 295x2. Are any of the problems we've been describing here addressed? And is 14.4 another true beta or is it the WHQL drivers that are supposed to be released sometime this month?

Hello Phallacy,

I can't comment on the review websites. That being said, I can tell you we are working on the bugs/issues you've reported for Catalyst 14.3 Beta. The new driver we're planning to release this month is the WHQL driver.

Appreciate the update. Looking forward to 14.4 thumb.gif

I installed 14.4 today and I see no more stutter in bishock infinite when using v-sync, unfortunately stutter is still present in Battlefield 4 when using mantle & v-sync on,v-sync off works ok,many users report the same problem with 290/x gpu,has to do someting with battlefields game update (march 31) before patch it was buttery smooth...

I can confirm that all my issues dissapeared with leaked 14.4. No more stutter, no power tune bug and all is very smooth. Finally i can have fun with mantle and directx without swapping drivers. Only cannot understand why they hiding this driver from 27 march ;-) We reported so much issues, and most of them was fixed two weeks ago.

Finally good work AMD, and thanks for guy who leaked this.

Guys, just be aware that driver releases for press may contain "hastily made" optimizations which will be not included in next WHQL or Beta.

Usually its working solution which will be applied later... after intensive testing.

Stuttering and huge mouse cursor gone ! Looking forward to the WHQL !

Going to try out that 14.4 release while waiting for the official release. Here's hoping I can finally get on some drivers that aren't around 6 months old!

Warsam71,

Are you adressing the hideous issue of the BSOD upon install of 14.3 b1 with the release of 14.4? Excuse my tone but I was a bit more than upset when I installed the drivers to get better crossfire / mantle performance, when I bluescreened on a perfectly stable system, when updating, and doing a fresh install with older drivers completely removed. I understand they are beta drivers, but something that causes me to restore my PC from an image or restore point (which I manually made, thank goodness) because graphics drivers are flaky at best. I am running two 7950's if that makes a difference.

Thank You!
