D5 Pump & XPSC Dual Bay Pump Reservoir Vibrating/Buzzing

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

So my D5 Pump has started to vibrate like crazy recently after a few months of solid use. The vibration is causing a rattling noise throughout my system which is driving me mad. There is no air in the loop as it has ran silent for months until recent. This is the second time this has happened to me and all together I've been through 3 D5's over the years. Is there any way to remedy this issue? Is there a better, more solid pump / reservoir combo I can purchase which is proven to last?

As much as I love water cooling I'm almost convinced that my best bet would be to go back to air cooling my GPU's and purchase an AOI solution for my CPU.

Apologies for the rant, frown.gif

My loop,

Is the rattling coming from the pump itself or from the reservoir bay rattling against the case?

I'm almost certain its the pump vibrating more than usual which in turns makes the bay reservoir rattle against the case. I guess i can secure it tighter to the case and add some material to absorb the vibrations but I'm more worried that the pump is going to eventually give up and die.

I know tearing down the pump is a pain, but maybe there is some extra material rattling around the ceramic ball inside the pump.

I'm in to hear the result of this, My XSPC dual bay res/pump makes some weird noises sometimes as well and even though It's not a D5 I'm very curious about your situation.

Do the pumps vibrate if they are run individually?
This is pure speculation, but I've heard from other people that if the restriction in your loop increases it could cause the D5 pumps to work harder and to vibrate. Gunk and dirt from the radiators can build up in your GPU or CPU blocks over time and restrict the flow. Unfortunately, the only way to verify this is to open up your blocks and see if they need cleaning which is a major pain in the ass. frown.gif

Did you move the case recently? If so, an air bubble could have dislodged from someplace such as the radiator or reservoir and is now stuck in the pump. Debris within the pump is possible but rare, especially if the radiators were flushed properly upon installation.

I've always kept the PC in the same location. I drained my loop yesterday to take a closer look at the pump and found nothing. I couldn't figure out how to open it and didn't want to make things worse so I left it as is. With that said I put everything back and got it running again and the rattling / vibration is still there. I've tried everything to better secure the bay as to reduce the vibrations to no avail. It vibrates so much that it can be felt along my entire desk.

I placed my final water cooling order for the following bay reservoir/D5 pump combo. I like that this version has a speed adjustment, I have always used the non adjustable version.

Should something happen to this one I'm just going back to air..

While this may be a possibility like you said it would be a major pain to do. I think I would sooner go back to air if this were the issue. My system usually never goes past 3 months without me flushing it to mess with something so hopefully within that time nothing has had a chance to grow. When inspecting the water drained I've never seen any dirt or anything suspicious (I know this doesn't mean anything).

Same issue here too.
In my case, I believe the pump is definitely damaged. I just need to figure out how it happened :/
post #10 of 18
Disconnect the pump from the loop and run water through it in a sink or something to see if it still rattles without any blocks or radiators attached. If it rattles you can be sure the pump isn't working properly but if it doesn't you will know the problem is in the block or rad and that the pump is working to hard.
