Grumpy 8350, can anybody help?

Hey guys,

I've had my 8350 for a year or so, been pretty happy with it, but the darn thing wont overclock, as soon as I try to take it over 4.3ghz, cores 7&8 fail in Prime95 with ILLEGAL SUMOUT errors, regardless of how high I set my vCore. I have been running it at 4.5 at 1.4V, but its not stable in stress tests. I cant get the darn thing to play nice. I have a Sabertooth 990fx board, 16gb(2x8gb)of Crucial Ballistix 1866 9-9-9-27 ram (1.5v), and an h100i AIO cooler.

Has anyone else encountered this on their 8350 and gotten over it? It seems like a power delivery problem, however this problem is consistent across two different motherboards and two different sets of ram. If its just a POS chip with a weak core module I guess I'll set it to 4.3 and move on, but it seems like a waste.

Thanks for your help!

Try it again with the ram at default of 1333 and see what it does. I have seen some ram kits that just don't play nice with the FX set-ups.

It sounds like you may need to set your LLC, cpu/nb llc, and other settings a bit higher.

+1

follow that guide, it solved all my overclocking issues and got me on a stable 4.8ghz with the same mobo and cpu

I've followed this guide, starting from scratch several times for the past few months, and I've got LLC on the CPU at Ultra-High, and the CPUNB at high. This chip will run 4.3 ghz at 1.335V 24/7. It simply wont go past 4.3ghz. If I raise the cpu speed to 4.4ghz, either through multi only, or thru fsb only, or through fsb + multi, it fails core 7&8. I'd honestly be really excited if prime failed any other core. If it did, we'd be on to something.

how high have you gone with the voltages so far?

It sounds like you've tried a lot of different angles to get this to work. I would like to know which Bios you are using? If you are on Win7 I have found ver803 to work very well . 16GB of ram can be harder for IMC to handle, I would just start over. Set the bios to default, don't set the ram leave it at 1333 and set the ram voltage to 1.55v. Disable EPU, C1E , C6, APM and turbo also enable HPC. Then I would set the voltage to 1.4 and start raising the multi untill it becomes unstable with P95 blend kepp a monitoring software open and watch the temps then report back.

I believe the highest I've manually set the voltage to is 1.45V or slightly above, the highest I've seen the motherboard let it go is 1.488V

I believe I'm using the P95 27.7 or 27.9? not positive, whatever the latest was 3-4 months ago, I have tried IBT, not sure what IBT AVX is. IBT will allow me to raise my clocks a bit more than Prime, though the results are not consistent, I can get 4.5 to run in IBT, it will work for a run of 15 at standard load for one try then the next time I try it, it will fail after a couple passes.

I was using 2005 until this afternoon, I am currently running 2104, nothing changed other than the board wouldnt read the proper timings from my ram sticks anymore, I had to put all of them in manually. 9-9-9-10 was never going to work.

Will do, sounds like you think its primarily related to my memory speed, and due to it testing better in IBT I'm starting to believe you. If it cant run at 1866 cas9, where can we loosen the timings or add voltage to get it to run at 1866mhz? I'd like to get the most out of this ram, it wasn't cheap.
I don't think it's the speed so much as the ram itself. Like I said I have seen the corsair cause problems in the past which is why I suggested an older bios. I have seen this before and typically the newer bios sets the subtimings too tight and causes problems.
