Is my CPU safe?

So, I'm in the middle of my first ever OC attempt with an i5 4670K on air. Just made it through intel burn test with 4.5ghz and 1.270V with max temp of 82C. Now I'm about to start testing with aida for a few minutes and prime for a few hours, but I guess it will be stable. With 4.6ghz and 1.280V it would bsod in IBT, so I tuned it down cause don't wanna get the voltage too close to 1.3V. So, is my CPU safe? Will it degrade faster? Going to set voltages to adaptive after I know it's stable to keep it from running on high voltages all the time.

temps are 10C higher on Haswell/Ivy due to TIM paste instead of soldered, but they're fine up til 105c.

But really, you want to stay under 85C at all times.

TBH, i recommend 4.4 ghz and go with voltage of 1.26v. See if that is stable first. at 4.4 ghz on Haswell is already like 4.9 Ghz on Sandy Bridge, so it's fine, really.

Max temp at 82C is fine for heavy stress test loads. Will be less than that in your day to day stuff.

If you get 4.5Ghz toaster stable at 1.27v then personally I'd be happy with that result. Especially if you can incorporate adaptive voltage control you've got a winner.

As for degradation or early failure there isn't a set formula. As always with overclocking YMWV. But I can safely say that at your current speed, voltage and temps you will probably out grow your affair with this processor long before it's ready to give up the ghost.

When you say set it to adaptive are you saying set the Vcore to adaptive? If you do that the computer is probably going to give it more than it needs in an attempt to achieve stability. Ideally you want to find a sweet spot with the voltage so as it's not too high and therefore running to hot but at the same time it is stable.

I'm fairly certain the OP means setting the cpu vcore using DVID voltage offsets instead of a static 24/7 vcore. At least that's what I was referring to smile.gif

That method works fairly well for nominal overclocks on the last couple of Gigabyte and Asus builds I've worked with.

Already did a minor test with Adaptive, and it works just how I read about it. With synthetic stress programs, like aida/prime/ibt it realy just ignores the max voltage you set. But I tested it with cinebench and superpi and it never got over the set voltage.

Quick update, after 30min of prime95 temps are around 70-85C depending on the test it's running

I'd be ok with that. What cpu cooler are you currently running?

What are your ambient temps? I'm just thinking ahead to the hotter summer months.......................
