New rig opinions wanted - Page 2

Well sounds like you know what your usages are especially with heavy OCing to be done especially when you submerge the rig. I'd get a classy 780 or 780 ti, you'd be fine at 1080p at this point in time with either (the latter of course pushing the ceiling higher).

By heavy I just meant probably more than say, 10-15 hours a week of gaming. I'd wouldn't step down from a 780/ti/290x level of performance since you say you want the best at all times and do BF4 a bit. Sounds like SLI or Crossfire would be a possibility later but not now so stick with a single card.

Haswell and Ivy disappointed me so I'm still sitting on my 2500k until maybe the next cycle if it's compelling enough but who knows at this point.

What's your buying location and main markets for parts?

80 plus has nothing to do with quality

I know what 80 Plus has to do with. I'm just under the impression that higer efficiency PSUs are generally of higher quality than lower efficiency ones, at least comparing PSUs of the same company.

Look at the bottom of my post, at the line about Skroutz.gr. You can search the Greek market for whatever you may want to suggest and not wait for me to reply or anything. It would make both our lives easier. smile.gif

Thanks for all your help man!

Yep, I do know what I'm doing. Only bad thing is that I may not have the money to do it all, especially when it comes to water cooling. And I do tend to overdo it with these things. For example my budget will probably be just enough for me to buy a 780 classy and I'm already looking at the 780ti Classy. I can't help it.

As for SLI/CF, I have that in the back of my head, but by the time an overclocked 780/780ti isn't enough, it probably won't make sense to buy a second one, so it's not really probable that I wil be getting a second card, but it's a possibility nevertheless.

Right now I'm trying to convince myself that a 780ti doesn't make sense and that I should be buying a 780. But damn am I stubborn!

Finally, I'm from Greece and I'll try to get all my parts from here. There is a slim chance a friend of mine that lives in the US (NYC) will be visiting us next month, so I may ask her to bring me some stuff from over there because, well, it's a lot cheaper. One thing I have to ask is, does anyone know how much a 780ti Classified weighs? I mean the whole package. If she is to bring me the GPU, i can't ask her to put a huge box that weighs 3kg in her luggage. Dimensions for the card are available, but weight isn't. Also I couldn't find the dimensions of the box. So if anyone has this information, please do share it. Also, it's legal to do that, right?

I'll be getting my parts from wherever's cheaper, so I use a really great price search site for the Greek market called Skroutz.gr. If it's available in Greece, with only a few exceptions, a search there will return the lowest prices available. It's saved me a lot of trouble in the past few years. If you have to suggest anything based on price, search it there so that you don't have to wait for my reply. smile.gif

I know the feeling, I could've done a Ti if I tried a bit more to stretch my budget but said meh I got other things I can spend ~$260 on and not notice the marginal decrease in fps overall.

Ship weight for a 780 Ti classy in-box should be a good smidge under 4lbs(1.8kg), box dimensions should be the same as a normal 780 so measuring mine it's: 11.75" x 3" x 9.5". You should be just fine having her bring over the card in luggage.

Really? Hell yeah then, I'll contact her and see what she says. Thanks a ton pal!

PS : There shouldn't be any problems with warranty, right? I mean, say the card is defective and needs an RMA. I could get in touch with EVGA in the EU and proceed normally, even though the card has been bought in the US, right? The thought just popped up and I thought I should ask.

Hmm... I could swear that there was a way to toggle English there... Anyway, I didn't want to seem rude or lazy, I just thought it'd be a good way. Lemme check the PSUs I have in mind and I'll get back to you!

EDIT

EVGA Supernova 1000 G2 - 170€
Corsair AX760 - 157€
Corsair AX860 - 170€
Corsair AX760i - 171€
Corsair AX860i - 186€
Seasonic X Series 750 - 169€
Seasonic Platinums Series 760W - 192€
XFX ProSeries 1050W Black Edition - 198€

These are the first ones I could find. If I should look for anything else, any brand I might have missed, tell me and I'll search for it. Do note that, while there are better options for some of these brands, especially for Seasonic, I already feel quite uncomfortable having to spend over 150€ for a PSU, so I'd like to stay under 200€ and, preferably, under 180€. So far the AX860 seems like the best value out of all those I posted. I don't know whether Corsair's gimmicks are useful enough to go with a AXi series instead. Also, I'd prefer a gold or platinum rated PSU because, while not extreme, it will be a relatively high-wattage system, so the added efficiency will be better in the long run.

EDIT 2

Some others that look good on paper :

CoolerMaster V-Series V850 - 175€
Antec High Current Pro HCP-750 - 172€
Antec High Current Gamer 850M - 140€

There also seem to be some pretty nice Bronze rated power supplies for quite less money, but I think that going at least Gold is worth it. Platinum maybe yes, maybe no. Electricity isn't the cheapest here and with my usage it will probably pay off.
