GTX780 -> Which model should I buy

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
Hello
Returning to this topic: http://www.overclock.net/t/1473396/sli-question-gtx760.
Asked here in this thread if worth doing sli 760 but I ended up selling my 760 and now I will buy a 780, but I'm pretty undecided which model to choose. Among the MSI gaming and lightning which is preferable to buy? I know that lightning has better build quality, it probably makes more OC (?), But here in Portugal is € 50 more for the MSI Gaming.

Thanks

I personally was in the same boat as you and I wasn't sure which 780 ti to get but I ended up getting the best bang for your buck 780 ti I could find.

Where i come from the Galaxy HOF/KFA 780 ti is the same price as the reference model so I decided to get that since it had an aftermarket cooler that performed better than the stock cooler. I wish I could get the EVGA Classified but it was $100 dollars more where I came from and I don't have any plans of using LN2 anyway (The Classy was made for LN2 cooling). The MSI Gaming was also $50 more expensive than the HOF card so no go there for me.

I was also lucky that the card I'm getting has a water block (nice white and acetel) from EK since I plan to watercool my PC soon. So really it depends what you plan to do with your card. If you just want a card that performs well any reference 780 will be fine since most of them OC well anyway plus it's easier to find water blocks for them if you decide to water cool down the road.

From the 2 choices you gave, I would choose the lightning for the price since it's cheaper. Though you have to understand that the lightnings this round aren't good enough unless you place them under LN2 (they're also voltage locked unlike the classified from EVGA).

On a good day EVGA GTX 780 Classified and MSI Lightning GTX 780 are $500

They've been $460 before IIRC when R9 290 came out

~520 Euro frown.gif

or if importing is OK http://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/3072MB-MSI-GeForce-GTX-780-Lightning-Aktiv-PCIe-3-0-x16--Retail-_948872.html
^ ~460 Euro

^ ~470 Euro

Cheapest GTX 780 seems ~ 420 Euro, so the 50 Euro premium is probably worth it
