280x Questions

Thread Starter
Hi there guys, this is my first time on this forum. I have read benches and all kinds of stuff from this website for a few years now and finally decided to join up.
First things first, about a week ago I purchased a R9 280x from "Club3D', I got the Royal Queen version. This card is replacing an HD 6870 that just can't hold it's own anymore. The card has not arrived in the mail yet, but I've been reading nonstop since I hit that checkout button at newegg and I've started to become concerned. Is it true the 280x's are having artifacting issues, and I don't mean just Club3D, I mean across all the different manufacturers. Also how hot is hot for these cards to run? I have read so many reviews saying the CLub3Ds cooler sucks, and then the next guy says it's amazing and never ever get's hot. The other thing that really makes me feel conflicted is that these cards have Elipida memory, and people say that it's garbage - - but some people say it's perfectly fine and that a manufacturer doesn't use parts that would affect the performance of their products.

I'm sorry for the rant. I bought my HD 6870 back in November 2012 and I remember how beast I thought it was, I only hope that this 280x brings me as much enjoyment as it did.

Welcome to OCN! thumb.gif
you can use rigbuilder at top right (under ad banner/above username) to enter specs on your pc and edit signature to show rig.
the 280x is same as 7970. Elipida mem is fine to run stock, but heard it's not that great with overclocking. not sure, but the artifacts might be from graphic drivers. heard a lot of complaints about the r9 series and AMD drivers, though I thought that was mostly with crossfire.
don't get to worked up until you test it yourself. there are a lot of idiots on the web and they dilute the truth about hardware by doing something stupid and blaming the manufacturer.

Blue Dragon nailed it. Elipida mem may not always OC as high but it's it's within a few percent. The biggest problem is

I got the video card today! It's very beefy, and seems very well made. It idles very low in temp compared to anything else in my case which is really awesome.
After installing my drivers though my computer says "Radeon 7900 Series" is that normal? I know its the Tahiti XTL and it's basically a 7970 GHZ edition but I thought my comp was supposed to know the difference.

My GOD the coil whine on this thing is intense. I hope it settles down. Has anyone else had this problem before? It's running really well but there is a pretty loud coil whine sound.

OH for the love of all that's holy. I got my drivers installed, and played Battlefield 3 for 45 minutes. My computer froze to this horrible digital noise, and now my comp has no display when hooked to the graphics card. I had to boot using the intergrated graphics on my i5, and the device list is not showing the r9 280x at all. Should I uninstall the drivers for it? I was using the beta drivers.. or is my card dead? The fans are still spinning on it but I don't know if that means anything. I'm so upset right now.

that doesn't sound good... you can try pulling card and reinstall drivers, but doubtful that will help anything... it sounds like it's dead. at least it went quick, shouldn't be a problem returning it.

Returning it isn't a problem, what is a problem is the Bitcoin miners. They're buying up all the ATI cards and now newegg is out of the card I bought. So if they don't have anything to replace it with I'm going to be stuck for who knows how long. I got a taste of some amazing framerates on Battlefield only to have the rug pulled out from under me!

Well I don't meant to bump my own thread but I would like to share my experience that is a result of this adventure thus far. I obtained an RMA from newegg.com with no problems to speak of. I mistakenly paid up front for the return shipping to them when it should have been a prepaid label. OK. So whatever, not a big deal though I found it quite odd that return shipping of a slower speed was DOUBLE the price I originally paid for shipping. ( $14.43 for 4 day ground vs. $7.87 for 3 day select?). Once it arrived last Friday, I recieved an email within a few hours being notified of it's delivery and that my RMA was being processed. A few hours later I received another email stating that my RMA was approved and the reason was indeed marked 'defective' as I had originally stated. At this point when I got home from work I checked the website to see if any more reviews had been left for the video card I had bought, and couldn't find it on the website any longer. Doing some digging in my history I found an old link to the card and it says 'This product is out of stock and may or may not be stocked again." Being that Neweggs return policy on higher end video cards is "replacement only" I got nervous. I called them up and explained the situation and gave them my RMA number, and they said there is nothing to worry about - whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. Finally I get an email on sunday stating that my RMA has been changed from replacement to refund. I contacted a rep on their chat about why I had paid return shipping out of my pocket for a product I won't ever be getting back now. They refunded my $14.43 for return shipping, AND offered me a $15.00 discount on my next VGA purchase. So on Sunday night anticipating my money to be returned shortly, I bought a Powercolour R9 280x Turboduo OC. It was on sale for $329.99. I found a promo code that knocked it down to $312.99. I am being credited the $15.00 so that brings the price to $297.99, which means that I actually come out ahead in all of this since it's a better card.

Overall I've seen a lot of crap talked about Newegg.com, especially on reddit and some review websites - but they took care of me and I will continue to use them for a good long time because of this experience.

comparing 7950 to 280x, which one's better? seems like both are the same board anyway
