[BBC] - US government set to give up net oversight powers - Page 2

We already know the domain control is being handed over to an international body. We'll be told that its going to the U.N., and we pretty much are already being told that, but the private interests behind the U.N. are the same ones behind the NSA. Basically, the NSA is going global under the disguise of "giving the ring back to Frodo".

We needs this to go to an international group...that isn't political. The sad thing is there is already precedence in the IT world for something like that...things like the IEEE for example. Though I'd want it to be more evenly distributed throughout the world. The IEEE is mostly Americans, but there are representatives from nearly every country that has major technological interests.

It'll get political really quick when an offshore entity starts taxing internet commerce in your country, capping downloads, or even censoring basic internet speech. My point is that even if this move does seem to meet some demands on the surface, there is certainly intent behind this that goes against the best interest of people no matter what nation you're from.

So...... what is going to change?

Under contract from the US government, Icann oversees the net's addressing system that underlies everything people do online.

Now it wants to go further and let Icann run that addressing system without any US interference.

Is the government forcing us to use less effective routes? I kinda doubt it. I'm sure they reroute some things from time to time, but i don't think its a dramatic change. Granted, I agree the government does need this control, it still doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

And why do we need oversight in the first place? Oh, yes, to control the net and protect people from their own subversive thinking.

Freedom is slavery!

Anyone who disagrees that 1984 is the greatest book ever written is either a shill or willfully ignorant.

I'd say it's tied with Brave New World. Two different flavors of dystopia that are both relevant; BNW elaborates on science and consumerism run amok; 1984 doesn't really hit either of those hard, but it does go into state-as-pursuit-of-power mechanism, a more accurate view than BNW's oligarchs-are-well-intentioned-but-wrong view.

Ultimately we're transitioning from a Huxleyian dystopia into an Orwellian one.
