So a friend and I had a few bits and pieces laying around here and there, but alot of videos to store with space running out on our laptops. I'm sure many of you have had the anime-storage blues, and we decided to maybe take a different turn at it. Cue project FrankenNAS.

Started out with my NZXT Phantom 410 (sadly black, not gunmetal) that was housing a not-so changed HP a6330f inside of it at my house. I was starting to get tired of having to transfer new downloads too and from my laptop back to the desktop, and not really being able to viably access said downloads when away from home. My friend, on the other hand, just recently moved from an 8800GTS desktop build (P4 based!) aaaaalllll the way to a new MSI laptop with a 6 series GTX in it. Needless to say he basically creamed himself after booting his first round of Mass Effect.

So, fastforward a few months, and both he and I have two lunks of towers sitting in our rooms and hard drive space running out. We decided to pull together and build ourselves a FrankenNAS.

Here's what we have so far... (Will add details when I get home, currently at work). The only things to have money spent on them so far will have links to Newegg.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+
AMD Athlon II X2 270
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
$30 Patriot Viper 3 4GB DDR3 1600
Random Video Adapter card we pulled from an SFF
Random 2x IDE Adapter card (Ew)
Random 4x USB 2.0 Expansion card we pulled from one of his old desktops.
3 Random Disk Drives
Some black PSU he had
$80 Rosewill FORTRESS 550W 80+ Platinum PSU

Hard Drives
1x 750GB SATA 2.5" HDD
1x 160GB IDE HDD

As you can probably tell, we're in quite heavy need for either donations or a winning lottery ticket, because the 750GB is already full and a 320GB from an XBox will be taking its place in my laptop's dvd tray. Anyway, more details and maybe pics when I get home.

Also, anyone with experience, how can I convert this thing from just being a FreeNAS box to being available remotely. Mainly just needs to be a cloud file server right now, but ideas for the future always creep up.

Thanks guys, just thought I'd share. thumb.gif
