If I wanted to cruise around and relax all day I'd choose a Harley, however I enjoy max performance and hitting the tracks (I really do) So I own 3 Sport/supersport bikes.

From my viewpoint what Occulus does it adds immersion into some games that support it. Higher resolutions / refresh rate screens do basically the same, just more games support these atm. I'm not after VR exactly, I'm after the better immersion and more enjoyable experience as a result. Going from single screen to 3 screen Eyefinity adds immersion and going from 3 screen to 5 screens adds immersions and even if I have to give up some GFX setting as a trade for higher resolution I am happy to do that as I'm having better experience (for me, its subjective) on my 5 screens with medium/low settings than rocking Ultra settings on a single 1080p screen.

I already have as much screens as I can run atm off a single card. But there are bezels which take a bit from immersion - they don't irritate me much but I am wondering if perhaps I would have slightly better experience with a 4K screen or 120 Hz 1440p screen and then you can put into the same lineup an Occulus Rift set - would it offer me better experience perhaps. I do not know really but I expect it to do that so I'm inclined to go for it once it releases if I can afford it over the 1440p at 120 Hz or 4K screen. Now if Occulus would have 1440p or higher reso and/or 90..120 Hz that would make it easier for me to justify it bcos hey, I'm getting the same resolutions as alternatives and it seems good value, right? It is after all a small screen taped to your face.

If the goal is immersion, go for the Rift. At 1440p the OR won't be sharp but the sense of actually being in the game is truly incomparable to even multimonitor gaming. It really has to be experienced first-hand to truly appreciate what the Rift does.

Here's a map of people around the world who are giving demos of their Rifts: https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=216080568301080371629.0004d6d217a93e60f7cc6&msa=0&dg=feature

Just noticed your profile says Tallinn. According to the map someone in Tallinn, Estonia is giving demos. Link

100% agree! You've really gotta try it out. I remember at PAX Prime 2013 I watched a guy playing the demo of a indie title (can't remember the name) the guy was walking around fine, and he decided to jump off a rock to check out another location. Now comes the interesting part, as he jumped off and landed he collapsed to the floor as if he just FELL off a rock. His brain was tricked into thinking it was really falling. I talked with the guy after and he was clearly a bit shaken but was thrilled at how immersed he got!

That's what rift is capable of in the right hands and setup correctly.

The Facebook acquisition puts recent information into context now. I don't have an issue anymore.

Congrats to Oculus.

I hope people can cancel their orders. With Facebook taking over, nothing good will come out of Oculus for it's original purpose.

They can't. They are spouting baseless speculations and fears. Based on no solid facts about what they will do with a tech firm.

Strawman arguments are fun but quiet often wrong

Notch makes his views very clear. Specifically that facebook has a history of putting gaming second to it's social agenda often at the cost of the functionality of the game.

Or the confrence call announcing the purchase outlining that the main goal for FB is to increase their user base (a issue notch noted) and to tap into a new venue for ad revenue.

Here's the link that was posted in another thread

These are your "baseless speculations" and "no solid facts"

And that means what? That OR will have pop ups? How about the fact they are looking to move this system into more diverse areas of entertainment? I assume if they brought sporting events to OR that would increase users? And increase ad revenue? That does not mean that OR used for PC gaming will magically have pop ups. Your choosing to pick out terms without looking further than just OR for PC gaming. That's the primary issue right now. Everyone complaining is so focused and short sighted they refuse to see what that log truly implies and the additional possibilities this will lead to.

Facebook did not spend 2 billion dollars plus a possible 300k in bonuses for PC gaming pop up ads. They are looking long term at the profits that VR tech can bring well past gaming.

And you're choosing to ignore the explicitly stated primary interest that FB has in OR. VR in general could be used for lots of things outside of gaming. I agree on that. But which of those things does facebook have any experience in? Streaming movies or other areas of entertainment? nope. Sporting events? nope.

The problem is you're weighing the generic potential that VR headsets have and assuming that FB is working towards these ends. FB only will work towards those other uses in so far as it helps them attain their primary goals.
