A few questions regarding various Linux apps/OS's

Thread Starter
I have inherited/saved about 5 old Dell P4s and an old Dell P4 server. What I was wondering is if these are going to be powerful enough to run various linux apps and or OS's.

What I was hoping to do was to setup a pfSense or Untangle system as my new router (old P4 Server). This one I am almost certain the P4 can handle given the 10mb connection. I was also hoping to setup a FoG server, Asterisk server, and XBMC server user the other P4 systems.

Now, even if they can all run off of a P4 each individually, would spending the money for an 8-core Atom based server to run FoG, Asterisk, & XBMC be worth it? Would the power savings make it worth setting one of these up or would I not recoup that cost? Also would 2 cores for FoG, 3 cores for Asterisk, & 3 cores for XBMC be enough?

One last question, any other fun Linux based servers I should throw on one to learn and play with? unRAID?

Any thoughts, opinions, or information you all can provide would be much appreciated.

I know this isnt all about Linux but it touches on various forums but the root cause of all of those is Linux smile.gif So if a mod thinks this should be moved, feel free.

If you plan to run the machines 24/7, and not just as an occasional testing environment then I would personally just spend the little bit of money on low power machines for such little uses. The P4's are going to run that power bill up quite a bit. They are power hungry monsters compared to Atom or similar.

Your requirements are really light.

This x 1000, you'll end up paying more in electricity than in new more power-efficient hardware.

Thank you both. This is what I was expecting to hear but kind of hoping not to hear since I have the P4s already. Do you guys have any ideas on how I should set up the various systems and if there are other or better alternatives?
