There's been an ongoing debate about this for 9 months among the more informed areas of the internet, with lots of people who don't see 100c on one load, 52c on another load and claim that the chips always run super hot

The hottest tests are not necessarily the tests that will give you the best idea of stability, true.

However, using every day loads to stability test can easily take prohibitively long. I'm not going to make x264 one of my preliminary stress tests because other tests will usually find problems much faster. After the system passes a 24 hour Prime run and 500 iterations of LINPACK, then I'll test everything else in actual use...and very rarely will I find something that isn't stable (because of the CPU or memory). I could spend the same time testing with x264 encoding from the beginning, pass with flying colors, and still have half the programs I use either crash or BSOD in short order, if I'm using superficially stable settings.

I agree, but Sandy-Ivy top out around what, 140gflops? Linpack can squeeze over 200 from Haswell at 4ghz. It's considerably hotter, having achieved a massive speedup - than other loads which are basically the same temps as ivy.

We've been refining the process of stability testing in haswell oc thread, you can pretty much get to the point where you have enough of every voltage to pass anything you want without running anything within about 25c or so of linpack

TIM just means thermal interface material. That can mean solder or thermal paste.

Also I'd be fine with a bare die haswell chip. Just sell it with a shim attached so people wont crack their dies.

That would be sweet and I'd like it a lot.

I've seen people argue that Intel won't ever do it because the CPU will die if the cooler is taken off. With the IHS it will manage to shut off fast enough before that happens. So the argument is that Intel won't do it as they simply don't want to deal with warranty issues. That made sense to me and I'm pessimistic about it ever happening except for notebooks where it's the same as in GPUs, the chip always being sold with a cooler already mounted.

more expensive than dealing with the RMA's coming in from kids with "faulty cpu's that get too hot", or the loss of sales because other kids don't want to deal with the heat in the first place? (popular reasons why people don't upgrade to haswell: #1 not worth it. #2 runs too hot)

It depends on what mobo will be needed for that K pentium. If z87 and z97 then no. overall value of AMD platform will still be better. IF however intel will give us support for overclocking at different chips, then yes. This will be a limited supplies AMD kick ass.

You seriously don't think Intel couldn't absorb the extra cost? They only made like 5 billion last quarter but look at the picture again. Improved tim on the Unlocked models. Not the whole mainstream lineup




Why are so many not being able to wrap their heads around them going back to solder? What other TIM is there? You think Intel is going to put MX4 on it? lachen.gif
