[PCPer] GDC 14: CRYENGINE To Support Mantle, AMD Gets Another Endorsement - Page 8

Maybe I should just own both a 780 Ti and a 290X... switch off for different games... i mean that's where the industry is pushing us honestly.

Attempting to at least. If Direct X steps up their game and the performance difference between Mantle and DX isn't much...developers are probably not going to bother with it. Why do all the work (even if the work isn't much) if you don't gain all that much. So I'd wait on that purchase. OpenGL has got a lot of tricks planned too...the trouble with OpenGL is getting the tricks from the planned stage to the implemented stage.

I think they're implying that they're pushing us there with all of this proprietary software, Physx for Nvidia cards, Mantle for GCN/AMD cards, if you haven't got an Nvidia card then you're missing out on the Physx effects and possible speed boosts in performance. (Apparently NS2 now supports Physx and this frees CPU time)
And if you haven't got an AMD card you're missing out on potential massive speed boosts in cpu limited/dependent games

To those saying Cryengine is hard on the GPU and not CPU.. consider the increases we've been seeing in multi-GPU configurations with Mantle in what we thought were GPU bound scenarios, and the fact that microstutter is a thing of the past with AMD's bridgeless Crossfire. The combo isn't just winning. It's bi-winning.

Tiger blood.

Hmm... I guess.

Or people without Mantle can throw more money at their machine to get the performance.

That's the norm on OCN. biggrin.gif

Where have you seen Mantle with multiple GPU testing? Can you share this? I was fairly sure Mantle wasn't working with Crossfire yet.

HardOCP tested Mantle w/ Crossfire a couple weeks ago. It works 'fine' if you can say such a thing in beta.

http://hardocp.com/article/2014/03/04/bf4_amd_mantle_video_card_performance_review_part_1/5

The short of it was that Mantle really helped Crossfire frame times.
Quote:
Looking at frame time performance under DirectX 11 mode, both the AMD Radeon R9 290X cards in CrossFire and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti have a number of frames that take longer than 20ms to deliver (some going past 30ms.) When Mantle was turned on for the pair of R9 290X cards, frame times tightened up significantly compared to DirectX 11 mode. Both DirectX 11 and Mantle provided a smooth and enjoyable experience at these settings. It is clear that Mantle can and does benefit CrossFire performance and smoothness. This is positive for AMD since CrossFire has taken a bad wrap, albeit deservingly so, in the past for un-smooth gameplay.
