Hello all,

Just joined after a long period of lurking the forum's endless pages of search results. The main reason being that my longtime faithful gaming ultrabook is finally showing it's age; prompting a dilemma and plea for any advice, but also so that I can contribute some experiences I've had and the compromises they've brought. Here's a picture of what it looks like after years of hard workhorse labor. I've listed the humble specs in my signature just for the sake of reference and preface. Drop me a comment if you have any suggestions or just want to say hey.

Thank you, thank you. Very good to meet you. I think you have me beat in lurking experience. I've been checking here for a year or two to find information on modifying components and drivers of my computer in an attempt to extend it's lifespan. Unfortunately I've had to return the gpu and cpu to stock clock speeds since the chips run hotter and the cooling no longer keeps it cool despite cleaning and aggressive fan profiles. Not like it was a beastly system even when new, but now if I want to play a newer game it doesn't handle much more than free to play indie titles.

I've never actually built a desktop, but would definitely think about giving it a try if I found a good setup. I've upgraded desktop gpu and ram, though and recently replaced the laptop's ssd and cpu. What's the general consensus here on building a system now as opposed to waiting a few months for the next gen release?

Well its easy to build a desktop. And u get more for ur money.. plus y can water cool them to really keep the heat down...

I think water pumping around my computer's insides would freak me out! I'm sure there's some good setups out there, but say you were carrying this thing around a lot like a laptop; wouldn't the slightest possibility of the tiniest water be too risky? I really like some of the tiny passive cooling cases that are covered in metal fins, I'd take one of those with powerful chips over a busted laptop any day.

If built right there shouldn't be to much risk in the loop leaking. Watercooling has come a long way since it was introduced with exterior radiators. If a custom loop freaks you out companies like corsair and swiftech and many more make all in one loops that takes a lot of the risk out
