Check gpu usage from msi afterburner or gpuz while gaming a fps

So how many cores out of my 6 need to be at full capacity before I'm CPU limited? Just one? My main concern is I don't want to buy something then become bottlenecked because my CPU cant keep up. I plan on making this CPU last until I finish my degree then I plan on a major overhaul. But I want to get the max performance I can out of it until then.

Some applications will load one core and be waiting on it, thus not be able to give you more speed, others will scale quite well across cores (x264 encoding high resolution video files)

As for games, many but not anywhere near all of them scale to ~4 cores quite well, some more. If your FPS isn't where you want it and you have a core at high load, it's likely holding you back

This is mid game in BF4. Its high, but what would you say? This was @ about 30 fps on high

If you lower settings or resolution scale and your performance improves significantly, you're GPU bound

i would never play at 30fps, i considered averaging 70 to be really low for an FPS when i played beta

I guess ill wait for the Maxwell card to come out and see what my options are

You cant really meqssure when the bottleneck will come since most of the games are based on the quantity of IPC or multithreads.then you have to determine if your gpu is bottlenecked by the gpu usage, the lower resolution and no AA or graphics filters the game become cpu demanding but at higher resolution or graphica details is more gpu demanding(unless it`s rts,3rd person view game, etc)
