That sounds alot.

Please forget the 780Ti is even there (let's not derail the thread debating whether it should be benched at 928,1000 or 1500Mhz). Even an i7-3770k@4.5Ghz/290X will see a boost in performance with mantle at max details if AA isn't used. This isn't a good scenario (who's buying a 290X to turn AA off in 1080p gaming anyway) but it illustrates that it isn't a case of "mantle doesn't help high end machines" rather a "memory bandwidth is a great leveler".

The biggest gripe with that bench in particular doesn't have anything to do with the GPUs themselves.

It's using windows 7 to do most of the mantle vs. dx11 benches. Windows 8 supports some newer DX features that can greatly reduce CPU overhead. At least in some titles.

It is still relevant, Win 7 is the most popular OS out there. By the time win 8 or newer catches up we may have DX12 out.

Am I really the only one thinking that these are great results, even if it's not what we would want on OCN (which would be improvements that would take our already highpowered rigs to mach-5)?
Raising the lowest common denominator is usually always good for very obvious reasons. thumb.gif

Well I don't think it would do much for higher powered rigs. The minimum frame rate is likely a CPU bottleneck...so you could replace that 270 with a 290x and the same minimums would probably be there in Direct X(though the 4170 with 660 vrs a 270 is an interesting result...I would not have expected that as that does look like the minimum was a GPU bottleneck). With Mantle's unified pipeline to the CPU the CPU<->GPU interaction should be more streamlined so that is why we see the minimum fps increase in Mantle on CPUs that don't just have the raw horse power to just process whatever comes its way.

I would have liked to see the maximum fps too...I bet that didn't change much in their tests. With higher mins of course the average fps increased...so that data isn't very informative. The Max fps would have told more.

Though I would probably consider the 270 as the starting point of the high end tongue.gif

Does Thief support frame time logging like in Battlefield 4?

I can make you guys another Frame Time utility if you want, but I am not getting Thief, so I won't have any log files to work with.

Also don't believe AMD marketing or PR. If that hasn't been said yet. Believe your peers / hardware experts when they show you comparisons.

This is coming from a noob here, but for high end systems using more than one GPU, say 2 or 3... wouldn't Mantle make a much bigger difference? In all the tests I see, an overclocked, high end Intel CPU + Mantle + high end GPU = about 3% improvement, which is nice, but perhaps not noticeable when playing, aside from the added smoothness of Mantle. This must be because the CPU is just powerful enough to not bottleneck the single card. If you are using more than 1 card, wouldn't the previously adequate CPU now become the bottleneck? Wouldn't mantle make a much bigger difference than 3% in these enthusiast level builds?

you are right... i would like to see more test on CF/SLI 3CF/3SLI or QuadFire/QuadSLI

In theory...but I don't think Mantle works with crossfire yet so we can't tell for certain. Though I haven't read the latest driver release notes...maybe they've fixed that?

Though with the "unified pipeline"...hmm...I can see it being more overhead to splice two pipelines together and sort it back out again after the CPU was done. If they split up the pipeline before hand, or have each GPU have its own, I think they would lose a lot of the goodies Mantle is bringing to the table. So Mantle might not ever really work well with Crossfire, but AMD hasn't shared the methods used to create this pipeline with the public so there isn't any way to know for certain at this point. Just have to wait.

It's kind of public knowledge that that is how mantle works. Don't know why you would have a gripe with that. End result is still better fps. Doiii.
