I was checking out the asus z87 rog formula on newegg.com just for curiosity and newegg has it advertised as 23c cooler . is the asus z87 rog formula really 23c cooler then a regular motherboard ? and does that mean the asus z87 sabertooth also keeps your cpu cooler ? because both motherboards have armor

I don't think any motherboard can run your CPU cooler than others, it depends on the CPU cooler. This "CrossChill" thing keeps your motherboard, especially the northbridge(I guess) cooler with ~20c cooler. A lot of high-end mobos(even the old ones) have heatsinks for lower temperatures on the chips and mosfets.

so its the z87 chip set that is on the bottom right corner of the motherboard that stays cooler ? why is that important to keep the chip set cool ?

I can't tell you exactly where the northbridge is located on this motherboard.

What is Northbridge -> Click
What is Southbridge -> Click
What is Mosfet -> Click
What is VRM -> Click

CrossChill system:

CrossChill hybrid thermal design
Great on air. 23°C Cooler with water

Choose between air or water cooling: it works with both! Unlike competing hybrid thermal solution, CrossChill requires no fan, so there's no noise or dust build-up. For those who do venture into water cooling, you can achieve up to 23˚C lower MOSFET temperatures for more stable overclocking! Internally the water channel fins help to maximize the surface area for heat transfer, and thanks to its G1/4 threaded fittings, CrossChill even fits into any existing setup! Don't settle for a second-best solution.

that "23c cooler" is with water cooling the mosfets on the formula vs a plain old heatsink on any other board. it's basically a deceptive marketing tactic. yes, some boards mosfets and other components run hotter than others at load. my first Z87 board had my cpu load temps around 10 - 12c higher than this one with the same chip and cooler. it's almost never to a large margin though and far from being dangerous. the armor on these boards is pure eye candy.

ASUS Z87 Sabertooth is using different cooling.

Thermal Armor with Flow Valve
Total Airflow-Boosting Heat Dissipation

Covers the entire board and features dual fans to direct cool air to critical parts and dissipate heat faster for better stability. Drastically boosts airflow and cooling with dual fans and a smart shunt design that directs hot air away from critical components. Air power is improved with a back I/O fan that pulls in cold air and expels even more heat. Exclusive flow valve design controls heatpipe air contact, better-utilizing liquid cooling setups.

Flow Valve
Control airflow for cooling flexibility
New generation Thermal Armor features an exclusive flow gate design.

In open state, the flow valve allows cool airflow from downdraft fans into Thermal Armor, maximizing airflow for fan-based thermal setups.

When closed, it focuses air on high-efficiency heatpipes for faster heat removal. This is especially useful for liquid cooling.

Convection Holes
PCB Convection hole for better cooling

Openings in the board are strategically-placed to improve air circulation and ensure effective cooling reaches under the board. PCB convection holes lower in-case temperatures, adding to system stability and endurance.

to me it looks like the asus z87 sabertooth got more going on for keeping the cpu cooler . thanks for those descriptions of both the motherboards . since were talking about motherboards what is thunder bolt on a motherboard ? is it a Wi-Fi thing

you have a gigabyte z87x-ud4h now ? and what motherboard did you have before ? if your cpu is running 10c to 12c cooler under full load now with the gigabyte z87x-ud4h that is a big difference in temps . I have the corsair h100i like you have listed in your signature and my motherboard is a asus z87 rog hero and my max temps with a 15 minute prime95 100% load test is 67c . but I think my ambient temperature in my room is a little high because I live in south Florida and my dad keeps the air condition thermostat at 77c all the time . what is your max full load temp ?
