[Engadget] Intel flaunts 8-core Extreme Edition Haswell with support for DDR4 memory - Page 16

The price of the amd rd chips is very appealing for people that can't swing a i7 and a good mobo for it that's for sure, but for people want that extra performance amd just can't keep up right now. Btw this isn't a thread about amd vs Intel, so far we have done pretty good keeping this one on topic and away from what these threads always turn in to, let's keep it that way please.

I feel I must apologise for my off-topic rant but the bias on these boards is disgusting.

I could easily build a top end Intel system but I'll spend my money on AMD anyway in fact this aging 955BE at 3.5GHz is still serving me well.

It's because AMD just keeps on adding moar cores while performance per core goes down the drain, remember phenom ii vs faildozer? That is where the MOAR CORES came from, because phenom ii performs better than faildozer.

It can be pretty terrible but it does go both ways most of the time, it's even worse on the gpu side of things these days lately. People can't go two posts without calling someone a fanboy then all he'll breaks loose lol.

my post above should say amd Aamd fx chips but my phone is an idiot.

You don't buy an 8 core CPU to just play games and run single threaded benchmarks. Unless, of course, you're from OCN.

3930K/4930K are 50%-100% faster than FX 8 core CPUs when using all threads. And don't even mention single/lightly threaded scenarios.

Or did you mean the i5s? Then yes, AMD's 8 core CPUs perform slightly better than Intel i5 quad cores in highly threaded scenarios.

I wouldn't be surprised if Haswell-E 5930K 8 core CPUs are 200% faster than 8 core FX CPUs when using all threads. It's not 5-6x the performance but still embarrassing for AMD.

lol true, but I think the widespread hate around AMD's "8 core" is due to the fact that they're compensating for a slower architecture by adding MOAR COARS, when they should be focusing on improving their single threaded performance.

I've never understood the "Amd is almost as good appeal". Right now a 4770K/Z87 Killer will run you 418.99 AR on newegg. Now unless you're a teenager working for Chick fil a how cant you afford that?

At the price those CPU's will sell it'd be embarrassing for Intel if they weren't faster.

They are compensating for lower single threaded performance through increased speeds. Intel did the same when it came to Netburst.

Ever heard of supporting the underdog and AMD's CPU's are fine. There isn't a single scenario in which anyone would need an expensive CPU for surfing the web or typing a letter, which is why Bay Trail ATOMs are perfect for Win 8 tablet PC's.

Edit: just realised it's you. Don't answer the question, I already know the answer.

I'm not sure if I'm quoting out of context, but are you saying CPU don't matter because most of the time people surf?

Well any ways, I'd take a CPU with a higher single core IPC over another CPU with more cores but has simliar multi core performance any day.

For example, I'd rather have a i3 ivy or Haswell Pentium over a i7 740QM. For people who enjoy somewhat out dated games, or badly coded games like GTA or DayZ, single core performance matters.

I've lowered my CPU to 1.6GHz and when it came to surfing the net it performed just fine, which is why Bay Trail is acceptable. You don't need 5GHz to load a website. Thus CPU doesn't matter for the average person.

While you start talking about badly coded games it's the fault of developers that games run terribly. I still can't fathom why Skyrim and Starcraft 2 were coded in x87, which was replaced over a decade ago by SSE. Those who came up with this idiotic idea should be put in a rocket on a one way holiday trip to Alpha Centauri, they won't be missed.
