I dont think AMD even developed mantle, I think it was a different team/developers and they went along with it.
Mantle is basically obsolete within a space of a few months unless it brings new features or is more faster and efficient than DX12
Though BF4 is still, arguably, somewhat buggy, its implementation of Mantle seems to work very well and pretty much met AMD's expectations.
DX12 on the other hand is still a wild card, except it's still nearly 2 years away from a product launch, at least according to MS's own projections.
1.5+ years is a lot of time to improve Mantle. Not to mention, Mantle documentation hasn't even been made public, so we don't know whether BF4 is a feature complete implementation. IIRC the developer beta access to Mantle SDK opens in April. So we may see more devs picking up Mantle long before DX12 gets a chance to come out.
