Not solely for BF4, but with it being a major release and Hawaii launching at the same time I'm sure they hoped the promise of Mantle would dramatically increase their PC market share, knowing full well that DX12 was already in the works.

Mantle wasn't some sort of altruistic move for the benefit of the industry, or gamers.

Can someone give us a recap about what's going on ? biggrin.gif

It's hardly a quick cash grab, when it's built in to their APUs and is expected to be utilized.

So Nvidia users are all set for DX12, but did they say anything about current GCN support? I missed it if they did tongue.gif

With AMD PR less than a year ago still confidently stating that there would be no DX12 and with mantle releasing in such a beta state with delays in drivers and all the games so far I think it's fair to say that what really happened is most likely:

(in chronological order)

-AMD, NV, MS, Intel, qualcomm etc. have been discussing this for a long time, Even the demo capable version has been in the works for at least a year (for forza).
-Afterwards AMD realizes that they're going to get a lot of experience with APIs due to their console involvement.
-With DX12 talks and console development advancing AMD realizes that they can use their experience to get an advantage over the competition since DX12 isn't close to being completed yet.
-The same requests that AMD has gotten (from DICE for example) have obviously reached NV, MS, etc. as well
-AMD along with DICE starts developing mantle on the same console experience that they've gotten
-Mantle, DX12 and the consoles are being worked on at the same time by different parties
-At this point MS, AMD, NV, etc. all know what is going to happen with DX12
-Everything still continues development
-Mantle for BF4, some other games, DX12 for forza etc. begins development
-AMD rushes out mantle in a pre-beta state with delays after going public with it months before
-Full mantle SDK release is still possibly close to a year away
-DX12 is close to being ready for demoing and relatively close for closed doors access to more devs

-At this point AMD's PR has mostly focused on being an open API and that it could be used by other hardware manufacturers. This is happening despite AMD knowing that DX12 with a similar feature set is already getting demos built and is close to being announced. This means that they are aware that mantle will not be implemented by other manufacturers and they also know that at this point it definitely isn't about driving DX into the right direction either. At this point it's about getting the functionality to AMD GPUs faster, thus creating an advantage for AMD.

-Then DX12 gets announced. And the rest is history.

Yes speculation, however I'd say that those events happening is the most likely scenario here. What's clear though is that DX12 isn't some emergency effort that MS patched together to counter SteamOS and mantle. And that DX12 isn't mantle either.

Of course the APIs will have similar feature sets and will function largely on the same principles. After all, they're both loosely based on the low level APIs of the consoles. They both come from the same place basically. One is a joint venture between MS and hardware manufacturers to bring DX closer to what consoles offer and one is AMD's effort to benefit from their console deals.

FAQ

Q: Should I wait to buy a new PC or GPU?
A: No – if you buy a PC with supported graphics hardware (over 80% of gamer PCs currently being sold), you’ll be able to enjoy all the power of DirectX 12 games as soon as they are available.

Q: Does DirectX 12 include anything besides Direct3D 12?
A: Also new is a set of cutting-edge graphics tools for developers. Since this is a preview of DirectX 12 focused on Direct3D 12, other technologies may be previewed at a later date.

Q: When will I be able to get my hands on DirectX 12?
A: We are targeting Holiday 2015 games.

Q: What hardware will support Direct3D 12 / will my existing hardware support Direct3D 12?
A: We will link to our hardware partners’ websites as they announce their hardware support for Direct3D 12.

This is the part that confuses me the most. Why would AMD spend so much effort on Mantle if they knew DX12 was coming, and that because it's DX it is likely to have greater support overall?

Mantle is making less and less sense to me as we get new info.

If you want to promote the brand, the new cards, and frostbite, it makes perfect sense.
