Noctua fans adapters

Thread Starter
Noctua fans comes with ultra low noise adapter and low noise adapter. How do i change the fan speed with the adapter?
You simply connect it between the motherboard (or whatever power source) and the fan. The voltage limits the speed. No intervention necessary. thumb.gif

It's a resistor (50ohm or 81ohm) : it just limits voltage. You plug the fan into it and the adapter into the motherboard.

Also one thing you should note, if the resistors get hot, this is completely normal. (I called noctua about it)

Just DO NOT connect more than one together. Possibility of getting too hot and burning.

How can that be? The current flowing through each resistor in series will be the same, so the first resistor will heat up the same amount as if it were by itself and so will the second.

Don't know, I had one and it was getting really hot. I called Noctua and they said it's normal, just don't connect more than 1 together.

Maybe that was to prevent you from dropping the voltage so low that the fan would not start.

You change speeds with adapters by swapping adapters. See this review. But really, they sell PWM fans on all their line. The PWM fans have totally silent IC's. I recommend those if you're going with Noctua.

The only exception would be the ULN fans. They run at extra-slow speeds. But I recommend PWM. If you are using Noctuas for case fans, get a PWM splitter -- they won't overwhelm it.
