Where can I find special ducting and silent 140mm fans?

Thread Starter
I figure I might as well take care of all the questions I have right in one thread here.

Hi, I'm new to this forum, not new to building PC's.

This is my second "thought through" build, as in I actually took time to route cables, find nice fans, and actually have an end goal in mind... that didn't include a boat load of zip-ties.

I am trying to find a way to duct air further into my case (Fractial Designs XL R2) before letting the air just play around. I want to go as silent as possible however.

I was looking at the AeroCool Dead Silence fans (I will have to import them from europe), all in 140mm.

Now, here comes the ACTUAL QUESTIONS:

1) What are the outright best fans for silence and obstruction-free airflow? Price is NOT a concern.

2) Is there any store out there that sells ducting for redundant case fans? I have been looking all over and can't seem to find any place I can purchase one of these. I want it to basically run from a fan at the front of the case, into a channel that leads to a second fan further in the case, without loosing its flow (see picture below - yellow:proposed ducting, purple:new fan).

Thanks all, and I look forward to this new community!

something like this? http://www.frozencpu.com/cat/l3/g47/c121/s442/list/p1/Fan_Accessories-Fan_Accessories-Fan_Ducts-Page1.html

It would not be too difficult to fabricate something like that from either acrylic panel or thin sheet metal (or fiberglass).... Just depends on how much time / effort you want to put into it.

I have used some of these in the past:

Acrylic panel from home depot... easy and cheap... look up some acrylic case building tutorials for info on how to work with it. This might be the easiest: http://www.homedepot.com/p/LEXAN-12-in-x-24-in-Clear-Polycarbonate-Sheet-GE-33/202038063?N=5yc1vZbrdg

On the fans... you mentioned Aerocool? I have 140mm Aerocool Sharks.. and they are as close to silent as I have found, and move a lot of air. Here is a review I did on the 120mm... but it is the same for the 140mm also.. : http://www.overclock.net/products/aerocool-shark-120mm-led-case-fan/reviews/6618

I'd look into Phanteks XP (PH-F140XP) , Thermalright TY-147 (120mm holes), or Cryorig XF140 (120mm holes)

You need to take into account flow loss in the duct ( the additional fan in series would help with the pressure loss), so IMO you're better off ducting the hot exhaust out like Thermalright does with the HR-22.

If you insist on Aerocool Dead Silence (it only goes up to 1000RPM), here's a price list:

I did try my hand at acrylic fabrication once... I really don't like to talk about the experience... it WAS NOT good. I have never tried my hand at metalworking... it could be worth a shot. I just have to factor in the ability to bolt the fan in. and work with screws and all of the angles... It could be worth a shot though!

I was looking at some of AeroCools newer fans (the Dead Silence). I did look at the sharks momentarily, but for some reason or another, decided away from them (cant remember for the life of me why).

That review is a lovely review of the cannon fake lens mug thumb.gif

I don't really have any place to duct hot air out. I already am moving all of my heat off of the CPU to the top of the chassis, and the evga ACX cooler seems to work well.

I suppose I want these fan ducts for a few reasons; I want a place to adhere my SSD's to, instead of using the hard-drive bays, I would like to move all of the inbound air further into the case (right by the GPU, soon to be GPUs).

Reading those articles, It sounds like the Phanteks fan is one of the best to go with. ONLY reservation i have with them is their frame color (I have white in the case and I want to get rid of the white).

For reference, I used Cougar fans on my last build, and LOVED how quiet they were... granted, they were the first "quiet" fans I purchased. I am still using some of the R2 fans that came with my chassis (the white ones in the photo)

hahaha.. don't ask me how that happened! http://www.overclock.net/products/aerocool-shark-120mm-led-case-fan/reviews/6615

Guess we have some real comedians here on OCN:

Is the image you posted the system in question here?

If so removing all the PCI slots will improve airflow of GPU cooler exhaust.

I use file folders to build ducts with. Measure out, cut fold, and tape / glue together. Than use rattle can color of your choice to paint. Usually build one to get everything correct, than measure it to make a good one. wink.gif

I had considered suggesting cardboard or heavy paper also... but didn't because I prefer normal case materials - thumb.gif
