In the market for new GPU. Need help

Hey guys!

I'm in the market for a new GPU, as my two ancient HD 4870 512mb versions really just don't cut it anymore. I find myself having to play on low, maybe if I'm lucky some settings on medium on most games that are coming out. Heck, I can't even play BF4 smile.gif I get like 2fps

My rig is down below, I game at 1080p and highly highly doubt I'll be going higher any time soon as I'm happy with my current Monitor right now.

Key things to note.
I live in New Zealand, so I cannot use American websites with your awesome prices. So head to www.pricespy.co.nz or www.staticice.co.nz to check out Local prices.
Also, while being able to play on "Ultra" settings for the forseeable future would be fantastic, I'm happy to settle with my performance to dip to medium/high in future games (as you can tell with me sticking to my 4870's for so long)

So with that said, I would love some advice on what to do.
Wait for new cards? I've heard that Nvidia is coming out with a new line soon, but AMD is far off.
Originally I was looking towards a 270x, as that's roughly $300 NZD.

Money is a little tight, with my budget I'll have $300 on April 23rd and $600 on July 2nd. Which gives a rough indication of how much I can save in a certain time period.
So if the cost of one of the upcoming Nvidia cards matches up with the rough time I'll be able to afford it, I'll string out and wait for that to happen, though I don't want to wait too long as I've waited forever already smile.gif

Side note: Also contemplating if I need to up my ram from 4 to 8.

Any/All advice is welcome and appreciated.
Though I ask that we keep Nvidia vs AMD fanboyism out of this

I recommend you save up for a gtx 770. (Or gtx 780 if you can afford it) I currently have a 770, and can max out BF4 with 50-60 fps constant. And definitely upgrade your ram to 8GB.

Hope i helped thumb.gif

i say go ahead and upgrade the gpu now and upgrade the rest of your sig when possible. not sure what cpu you have but that motherboard will hold back any gpu upgrade.

How/Why will my mobo hold back a GPU upgrade?
Also, updated my rig to show the CPU properly. It's an i5 3470.

& yes, I do need to upgrade my entire rig in a fell swoop, just don't have the funds to do so. Can only do bits at a time

probably not a 270X or lower but any higher, a locked i5 might in some games.

I think the sweet spot for 1080p gaming right now is the gtx770 (gtx680) and amd 280x (amd 7970) cards. They max out many games with very good fps. I personally love my gtx770. If you want reasonable overkill I would say gtx780 or amd 290. For the mid level cards I would say gtx760, 670, and 660 ti and on amd the 7950, 270x/7870. Those cards will still play games on ultra if your ok with slightly lower fps. If you dont plan on overclocking, the amd 270 is basically the same as a 270x just clocked lower and its max OC limit is the 270x clocks.

That said, I would recommend the gtx770 or 280x. My experience is with nvidia and can personally say the gtx770 is a great card. Handles BF4 without a problem.

I wouldnt worry about the i5 or the motherboard at this moment. That cpu should handle a gtx770 or 280x without any bottlenecks or at least VERY minimal bottleneck. Going to 8GB would be nice, if you dont have a SSD you will wish you got one sooner. I would get the gpu you can afford and see how it runs. If you can hold out till next gen intel or at least the revision to Haswell, wait. DDR4 is around the corner so Im personally waiting on that.

Any idea how long a 270X would last being able to run High/Ultra settings?

Last as in how long it can deliver those performance settings? Hard to say but Im sure AT LEAST another year. Im curious to see how DX12 will effect gaming. Others more into the software coding may comment with better knowledge on that.

edit: Not to mention that card can crossfire too so thats an option too.

270X is slightly slower compared to a GTX 760 or HD7950 (280). it should last awhile for 1080. i played BF4 MP with a 7950 maxed using 1080 but i had to oc my i7 to 4.5GHz.

My experience with crossfire isn't so great, didn't make much of a difference with my 4870's. Though I imagine it's improved since?
You're right, I could crossfire later on, no doubt the card will get cheaper as time progresses. DX12 looks promising, along with Mantle
