What do you consider Hi-fi? - Page 3

Just having a larger room will make the sound better though, right? Compared to a smaller room.

 

I was actually interested in the arrangement of speakers/computer in my room when I first decided to get my KRK Rokit6s. If you're interested:
I was thinking of changing the room layout from the top to the bottom. :) Which I (heard) would improve audio quality... but the stuff I read was more for music production.

The setup you're thinking is way better. Having the setup positioned in a corner of the room is horrendous for the sound. Symmetry is very important, to be able to hear the correct stereo imaging. Right now, your setup is a mess, acoustically. Sound waves bouncing in and assimetric way. All kinds of comb filtering, smearing of sound and incorrect imaging.

When you switch to the other position, just make sure your listening position (where your chair is) is dead center of the room, at approximately 38 percent of the room length. And make the monitors form an equilateral triangle with you, each monitor 2 to 4 feet separated (you in a corner of the imaginary triangle, left monitor on the other corner, right monitor on the other corner, so the distance between monitors, is the same as the distance from you to any of them), and have the monitors's tweeter point at your ears (buy some Auralex Mopads, or better yet, the Isoacoustics L8R155's, to defeat your monitors coupling with your desk and making it resonate). Don't forget to buy, if you can, some acoustic panels (or foam, at least) and put them on both walls besides each monitors, to treat reflections. You're going to have better clarity and stereo imaging :(at the listening position, at least).

Most people forget about the room sound, and it's sooo important.

Anyway....back to defining "Hi-Fi".... smile.gif

The problem is, moving the stuff around in the roof like so would take a long time. And the new layout would be less space efficient from a living perspective. Hmmmm. What if I move and I don't notice a difference? :D

If you define "Hi-Fi" as "The amount of money you have to spend get sound quality that is acceptable", I think its different for different groups of people.

So, yeah, I'd consider looking at the stuff you mentioned. In fact I did audition the Revel M106s.

But you could do the same thing at any price point and there would be stuff that's on the cusp that's, perhaps, worth considering.

And to those whose goal is to accurately reproduce the source material, don't you really want to reproduce the actual live sound that was recorded, not the recording?
Consider this quote that I read somewhere: "There are people who think their sound systems sound better than live, un-amplified, acoustic music."

I has more to do with what they are optimized for. Studio monitors or to be more accurate near field monitors are as the name suggest built for usage in studios where the listener is very close to the speakers. Sure there is also emphasis on flat response but in any good system the "coloring" should be adjustable on the source be it the mix table or an AV receiver. If speakers have lot of coloring in them selves that would most often be considered bad.

Unfortunately its very hard to build a truly neutral speaker due to physical limitations (you need a big driver for low sounds but a big/heavy driver can't respond fast enough for higher frequencies). That's why in better setups you tend to have a lot of drivers and pass filters to combat this issue and produce a more even response. Naturally having more hardware drives up the price so good systems have to be expensive.

As far as studio monitors goes its not necessarily a must to have a super expensive speaker setup in a studio. Its more about the person mixing knowing what they are working with (and usually they have some really good personal head phones as an reference). Professional mixers always have to try and balance things out in regards to what the music is going to be used for. An orchestral score meant for movie theaters will be mixed very differently form an pop song that is going to get most of it play time from crappy radios/ iPods ect.

I bought a set of Amphion 2s. But the Revels were close. Amphions did better with female voices and had slightly better imaging although the Revels were better near field.
