Huh. That is quite serious claim to make. 7 to 15x more is quite huge deal. At that kind of performance difference there is almost no point in using DX over OGL if it is also present in real life scenarios.

Now about comment of this being against nVidia, AMD and Intel's interests - I do not agree - we are miles and miles away from having "too much" GFX processing power. Not only are we stepping our standard resolution atm 4x up (by going to 4K from 1080p) but there is also VR revolution going on (Occulus, that Sony set) on top of having next wave of next gen game engines starting (Unreal 4 and others) which are pushing the boundaries what GFX cards can do. From the mentioned firms side, however, if DX gets kicked out they could focus on only one standard to be optimized instead of having to think about two standards. Plus if more devs bypass drivers entirely or partly through the use of OpenGL then hey, they are not under as strong pressure to optimize their drivers for some particular games in a hurry.

I agree. It's not soon at all...if anything it's a little late.
I am curious how much is the software actually holding back hardware performance. I guess we'll find out sooner or later:).

Finally everything I wanted software wise has happened.
Now we have DX12, Mantle and OpenGL fighting, and it's only good for the consumers.
Can't wait to see how it all ends up, software has held us back to long.. About time the game is changing smile.gif

At the same time my slant on this is how much money has AMD blown on Mantle development and has there been a positive ROI on it. Their cards are selling no doubt, but one might question is that more due to Mining at this point than Mantle.

The only truth in tech, is that High Tech employees can burn through money like they stole it. So would AMD / Nvidia join a Tribunal-like initiative with competitors? Sure, What do they have to lose? Nothing. If it works they may save money.

Aaand I may actually see realtime Fluid Dynamics on PC's in my lifetime. 7 to 10 times performance would do it definitely. Though I'll believe it when I see it.

with nvidia/amd/intel coming out together on this, so soon after the DX12 reveal...i can only imagine that microsoft did or said some incredibly shady/cocky stuff that finally shut them all off to the DX game enough that they decided to drop the squabbling and work together to push MS out.
