They could commit to OpenGL and CUDA at the same time just fine seeing as one is a graphics API and the other is compute.

CUDA and OpenCL would be a conflict of interest for them if anything.

This is good for the consumer no matter how you look at it! I am happy to hear about this.

I have always thought that the limitations are not hardware related but software related when it comes to our performance in games.

Wow, this is good news. How I remember about 10+ years ago it was about the Mhz or Ghz race for CPUs, then it became the Core race on CPUs and now they want to get better on a software level, their own kind of APIs....I wonder whats next after the APIs are all settled down and do good..??

I hope we can get back to the Ghz race again lol

I love this for the same reason I love Mantle.

It's taking control of the software that runs the GPU out of a large company that doesn't make GPU hardware and giving it directly to the companies that do. There is so much red tape with getting features implemented for DX that it's ridiculous. Nvidia and AMD basically have to beg Microsoft to add something. And the same goes for developers as well.

Cutting Microsoft out of the equation for PC gaming is absolutely the best thing that could happen. It will leave Nvidia, AMD, and Intel to innovate with graphics capabilities far more than they can with DX.

And all of this is going towards an end goal of completely removing the reliance of Windows for gaming. It's fantastic.

Microsoft gave all of us a middle finger by forcing us to use a touch oriented desktop environment with a mouse and keyboard, and everyone else who has the power and doesn't want to see PCs get replaced by tablets rose up and they are all trying to bury Microsoft. I love it so much!

I'm envisioning a future where Nvidia and AMD come up with their own features along the lines of tessellation, it gets pushed to Khronos Group, then the other side has to adopt it. Which means we might actually get a feature race in regards to 3d rendering, something we haven't seen since DX took over and killed everything else.

I absolutely love the support that open source is getting from the big boys now...

A possible reason that CPU and GPU companies are questioning DX, and by extension Windows itself, is because Windows and DX have not been coded for "low overhead" since Win2000 or possibly XP (which is why it won't die easy in April). Just look at the ISO size:

Windows 2000 Pro - 367mb
Windows XP - 589mb
Windows Vista - 4100mb
Windows 7 - 3300mb
Windows 8 - 3800mb

There's a theme here....something happened around the time of Vista.

But we need to see it in practice in a proper game or something, a graphics-heavy one.
