the only other thing that I think could have been the problem was my motherboard

Maybe we could tone down the interrogation of his upgrade process. Sure, there is definitely a possibility that something was wrong other than the 2600k. Maybe it was truly the fresh install that did the trick. But maybe he happened to be really unlucky and got a bum processor, resulting in poor performance out of the 2600k. Therefore, when upgrading to the 4770k (and receiving a quality processor), it seemed like an immense upgrade to him. Pretty sure that's what happened to me moving from PhenomII to Thuban.

I guess what I'm trying to say is we don't know for sure what might of happened, but for him, it was a great upgrade. And whatever the problem was, it is solved now and the chances of us definitively narrowing it down to the culprit are pretty slim. So instead of giving him the third degree, why don't we just say congrats. Pointing out the possibility of another problem could have been left to the first couple of posts. After that, we can probably let it go.

Well I ran IBT when I got my new CPU to see how the thermal paste was holding up with temps and to check general stability. I've heard one or two people having trouble with stock clocks and Prime/IBT.
