is wd red supposed to be this noisy when seeking?

post #1 of 32
Thread Starter
so... i assembled my first pc around 3 weeks ago. i bought my first WD red due to reviews and aiming for silence.
from reviews i assume it should be quieter than WD green. i never have an internal WD green but i have a couple external 3.5" mybook (which is green? CMIIW), so im familiar with it's seeking sound and the fan-like noise it generates.
on my PC, the WD red when being accessed, even when i just use it to create new folder, or just accessing it to enter some folders, it emits a clack clock clack clock sound really loud like a drum. it's at least twice or three times louder than wd green seeking noise.

initially i thought it was the drive dying. i tried crystaldisk info, and it's reported good. the extended test with WD datalifeguard diagnostics is also reported passed. smart test on datalifeguard diagnostics also passed.

1 thing to note... it's very very quiet when not being accessed at all though. when i just use the SSD and not use the WD red at all, it hardly emits any sound. but as soon as i access it, it's clack clack clack clack clack, like marbles falling to the floor.

i tried gaming with it, and when i stand still in an area with no enemy, then no sound, but when i go to new environment, i assume the drive renders or smthn, then its clack clack clack again. is this common behavior with WD red? im going to try RMA the drive though i'm quite concern that the local distributor probably won't accept it because smart test on crystaldiskinfo is showing everything is just fine.

is there any test i should conduct before going to local distributor to RMA it? is it really supposed to be this noisy?
i bought wd red because i wanted some degree of quietness. im going to change my case fans to noctua's in a week.. but its moot point before i can determine what's wrong with this red drive, cuz it's at least as loud or louder than a wd black noise i saw on youtube...

my pc is 3 or 4 feet away from me on the floor

How is the HDD mounted? It might be vibrating against the case.

They are noisy when they first start up, but after than all mine have been more or less like every other drive. You could disable or change the timeout settings.

I have a WD Red 3 TB and it's always quiet. Regarding how good I might be able to hear my HDD, the fans in my PC are running like this at the moment, all Noctua fans:

When did you hear those noises you mentioned? Was it also some sort of benchmark program or just doing normal stuff on the drive? If it was some test program, please tell the name so I can see how my drive sounds like with that test.

anything that involves accessing the drives. if i leave the drive alone then it's really quiet. but as soon as i click the drive letter / then creating new folders / accessing folders / looking at pictures / watching videos, anything that involves seeking the drives really, it becoimes clackety loud.

i didn't do any benchmark program, i just use the PC as normal. even though i bought it from 3 weeks ago, i've been using it for less than 20 hours in total so i didnt notice it at first, because while installing windows and drivers, i multitask by watching movies on my TV biggrin.gif now that i think of it i'm sure it's noisy from when i bought it though.

what's really bothering me is that the clackety clock noise is as loud or probably louder than the WD black seek noise i saw on youtube videos...

===
@RushiMP how do i disable or change timeout settings?

@atminside its bitfenix shinobi window, so it looks like this...

@deepor... btw.. i hv a question to ask about fans installation. so this is my first PC. i got 2 stock case fans, so... based from watching YT videos, i plugged it in SYSFAN1 and SYSFAN2 on the motherboard. from within windows, my board have this installation called command center that can control the fan speed from 50~100%

my question is... if i buy 3 fans setup like you do... how can i control the fanspeed considering i only have SYSFAN1 and SYSFAN2...?

===
btw when i first got the drive, i just went to disk management and quick format it (because initially it wasn't detected on windows...)
is that the proper way prepare internal hard drive before using? or is it compulsory to full format it? (again... my first PC and i went from zero knowledge about PC building. so... heheh biggrin.gif)

So, while the drive is mounted with that quick release, can you move it around any at all?

idk how case vibration sound like other than this 1 obscure youtube videos that showed case vibration as a humming / buzzing sound, and if that's the base for vibration, then no the PC case doesnt vibrate. is case vibration identifiable by touching the case? if so, then no, the case when i touched it, doesn't vibrate...

again, idk any better since im new and google only took me so far but... rather than seemingly look like pc case vibration, it's more like the sound of the drive needle hitting the drive platter. if thats even the correct terms for it. it sounded exactly like a wd black seeking sound, but louder. and it's only noisy when i access it. but i was about to use the drive for my work drive so... yeah.

it's not really a sound i can tune out either, for comparison the bitfenix shinobi stock fans is not exactly quiet either...

and regarding the case itself, it's a tool-less installation, slide the drive in, and the rectangular thing with the circle button, it holds the drive from the side. the rectangular thingy has fixed screws on it, so no.. it's not movable. at least it's not left and right movable, im not sujre abt up and down, havent try it yet.
the sound is more tock tock tock tock than a clickety clack really.

also for another comparison im using a cherry mx blue keyboards and i guess i'd say it's loud enough for me to notice it while im typing non-stop so it's loud enough. in comparison, my 3.5" wd mybook external (green??) also have audible seeking noise when accessed but i can tune it out while typing. it's not particularly bothersome

What I'm asking is if you grab the HDD and try to move it, with it mounted in the Shinobi, does it move?

There's Y-cables to plug two fans into the same fan header on the board. The Y-cable will wire power to both fans, but the fan speed signal that goes back to the board will only come from one fan, you won't know the speed from the second fan. You might want to use two exact same fans on the Y-cable so that you know they will behave the same if you play with the fan speeds.

Here's one for 4-pin that looks nice and not ugly (will also work with 3-pin fans): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812162026

I've got my array of 5 drives, all WD Reds and they've never made a sound for over a year.... IF your mount is "sturdy" then it sounds like the drive is having issues with the heads (Poss bad PCB of the drive?).
However if your mount isn't sturdy then the case could be amplifying any noise the drive is normally making.
