Windows iso install for another computer

Thread Starter
I am going to be replacing a dead hard drive in a friend's laptop. I know it is possible to install Windows via iso from a usb or a dvd. I can hot swap hard drives with the hot swap bay on the top of my case. I was wondering would it be possible to format and install the Windows iso with my machine, put it in the laptop and finish the installation from there? Instead of booting it from a dvd or usb, mount it on the new hard drive and go from there?

Yes. Pop all your drives out and put the to-be-laptop drive in. Go through the install process as usual. When you're good and ready to prepare the drive for the laptop, run a Sysprep. Once done, you can pop the drive in the laptop and it will configure the install accordingly.

Edit: Google doesn't provide the best links.

Open Run.
Type Sysprep and enter.
Open Sysprep application.
Select OOBE and tick Generalize.
Set Shutdown option to Shutdown.

When the process finishes and it shuts down, remove the drive and its ready to go.

Edit 2:

Should probably keep network disconnected during this endeavour to avoid Windows activation issues.

I didn't feel like disconnecting everything. Wiring can be a hassle. I just did it the old fashioned way. Thanks for the help though!
