Fair enough, I don't disagree he's the least likable character in the game. I just don't get where you think that sort of character progression is so commonplace. Bioshock 1 is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. This genre more typically follows the Crysis/Gears of War model of, "you're a killer, now go kill." I'm playing Rage right now, you wake up after a century of being in cryostasis after an asteroid hits earth, and the first thing that happens is some guy you just met gives you a pistol and tells you to go clear out a bandit nest. That's how most shooters are. So that's where I'm disagreeing with you. Whether the plot is contrived, the characters are well conceived and executed, etc, is just a matter of taste.

Name me a few examples of what you mean when you say this sort of thing is all over the place.

I still have to play a lot more of FC3, but I like FC2 better, and FC1 is my favorite. They should never have used the FC name on 2/3.

I'm currently playing Far Cry 3 with two 7950s in crossfire and it's working great for me.

I really hope that they make this game actually challenging. I like the franchise. There were great improvements over 2, mainly getting rid of some of the repetitiveness that 2 was notorious for. But 3 was just waaaaaay to easy. When I'm forced to avoid leveling up in certain areas and use low tiered weapons and secondaries in order to make the game challenging (on the "hardest" mode) there is a big problem. The Batman games are like this as well, except that they're pretty fun that it's tolerable. Skyrim was like this except that the existence of mods fixed it.

Oh yea, and this time around get a better protagonist. Because the last guy was....he was just, wow. But I would love to see who they've created as the next bad dude.

Spare me all this drivel about Far Cry 3's story. Far Cry's story may have been weak (although it certainly made up for it elsewhere), but Far Cry 3's was painfully bad. That is, I found myself actually feeling embarrassed on it's behalf. It's like a 13 year old school kid's fantasy - drugs and sex clumsily thrown in, in a futile attempt to lend the game some maturity, along with the terrible brostep score (One of the few games I've played where I've been compelled to turn off the music altogether).

I'm sick of this reluctant hero bollocks too. Is this some kind of weak attempt to justify the inevitably unreasonable video game body count? "Oh, he didn't want to kill, he was forced into it..." This doesn't make the carnage to come any more plausible. All this means is that we have to listen to a bunch of contrived whining and moaning from the protagonist for the first 15 minutes of the game, following which he spontaneously becomes an expert in weapon handling and proceeds to kill with reckless abandon. In the end it would have been less absurd if they'd taken the classic 'hero is conveniently ex-military' route. Far Cry 3 made me feel more inclined to kill Jason Brody than the damned enemies. Comparing far Cry 3 to the more conventional FPS approach taken in Crysis, who would I rather play as? The elite soldier, or pathetic, drug addled Jersey Shore muppet? Hmm, that's a tough choice... rolleyes.gif

I have to admit that for me, on a few occasions, Far Cry 3 somehow managed to capture a bit of the original Far Cry 'feeling', but it never held it for long, and the game is but a shadow of what Far Cry was in 2004.

The game also had the fakest fake German accent I've heard in a long time. Whatever points it might have gained from the competent Vaas voice talent, it loses for the terrible German and New Zealand (?) NPC voicing.

You think the Crysis story is better than FC3? Only one of the stories had any plausibility, and it wasn't Crysis. As sensationalized as FC3's story was, it never crossed over to impossible-bordering-on-absurd like Crysis did.

Nowhere did I say that I thought Crysis had a 'better' story than Far Cry 3.

Crysis had a weak story. It was an improvement on Far Cry, but not by much. Story was never Crytek's forte, but they more than made up for this in other aspects of their games.

That said, despite it's weak storyline, Crysis is still more mature in the way it delivers it than Far Cry 3 is. And the way it presents itself in general for that matter. I've been playing them both extensively over the last month or so, and Crysis is just in a completely different league altogether. Far Cry 3 just feels, err... 'quaint' by comparison.

Oh, my bad. I thought you were implying Crysis had a better story.

I personally loved the FC3 approach. To me, the story was told in a way I'd never experienced. I liked how it used drugs and "the jungle" to bring in faint hints of elements of supernatural, while still remaining grounded somewhat in reality. I also thought the music added to the story. The whole thing reminded me a little of Max Payne set in the jungle.
