The online deal is clearly the better option here.
Online: Keep your old PC
Store: Give away your old PC

I know I would not get rid of my old PC for $100, even for cash in my hand instead of a discount, it'd just feel like a ripoff. It still runs just fine on everything but intense tasks like modern games and encoding.

I know this is an effort to try and convince people to switch but it just doesn't really seem good enough to me.
Countless people will still take them up on the offer though, especially the kind who throw/give away their old PCs.

That could have been an awesome idea, but Microsoft wants XP dead and gone to "force" people into their Newest products.

That is false. Microsoft isn't going to release XP as open source because that would be completely stupid. Here we are in a thread discussing a trade in offer due to XPs imminent support end, and people really think that Microsoft would want to open the source code??

I mean, yes without security updates, XP will gradually become less and less secure, but if they did that, it would open the floodgates of hackers on the system in an instant.

Not to mention that NT 5.1 and NT 6.x share a LOT of the same code. That would mean opening up huge chunks of Windows Vista, 7, and 8 for attack. Open-sourcing XP would be a terrible, terrible idea and one that Microsoft would never even consider.
