What is a "gamer"?

Thread Starter

Hi,

I am curious what you guys think the word "gamer" means. Is a gamer somebody who plays games? Even that is a little vague to me. Somebody who plays games on a regular basis is what I think people mean when they say that. I mean, if I've played a game once in my life and I never touch a game ever again, I doubt anybody would call me a gamer. So how regular is regular? And what type of games? If I play minesweeper because the internet died and I can't check Facebook, and I like minesweeper, am I a gamer? What if you don't have free time to game but when you do, you jump at the opportunity to play some games? You rarely game but you really want to game. Are you a gamer?

If I nolifed Farmville or Flappy Bird, am I a gamer? When we think of gamer we might be tempted to think about some online gamer, who plays COD or WOW or something. But who has the right to decide what type of games a person can play to be counted as a gamer?

What if I play games only during class when the teacher is boring me and I barely give any thought into the game I'm playing?

And heck, gamer means a person who plays games... It does not specify what type of games. If I play Monopoly on a day to day basis, am I a gamer?

There are some people who use the word gamer as an exclusionary term, where you have to fit their notion of what a gamer should be like. Some people like the term "real gamer". So that, a casual gamer plays Halo on easy, but a "real" gamer plays Halo on hardest. I think people use this word for their self-identity, to belong with a group of people who love games intensely and play something over and over again. But in the process, these same people might not embrace diversity and would feel that a person who plays Farmville isn't a gamer. But the word 'gamer' has been used every-which-way until it pretty much doesn't have a meaning anymore.

And finally, my question is, Is gaming mainstream?

Some may argue it isn't because people feel the need to call themselves gamers. You don't call yourself a food-eater or a TV-watcher or a car-driver. People watch TV, people drive cars, people love food. All to different degrees, but we don't feel the need to label ourselves "Movie-watcher".

Exactly what the word means, Gamer, someone who (plays) games. It's just adding the suffix 'r to indicate it's the person doing something, just like many other words in the english language.

Driver - Someone who drives
Rider - Someone who rides
Dancer - someone who dances
Griefer - someone who causes grief
Player - someone playing

Just to name a few.

Gamer: one who actively engages in the video gaming hobby.

These days "gamer" is a very casual term that can easily be used to describe a large portion of the population. Years ago, only a small portion of society were active video game players, that's why it used to be so cool, it was a thing only few could discuss intelligently.

I think the definition is to narrow. If you play checkers, your a gamer, if you play Monopoly then your a gamer. A gamer is someone that finds playing a game a fun form of entertainment, the type of game does not matter.

I think the term now of: "Hardcore Gamer" (when relating to Video Games) is more closely akin to the Gamer of 15+ years ago, those who have a rig powerful enough to play CPU/GPU intensive games and do so at a level of competence.

also Those who purchase Hardware greater than their NEEDS to be able to play games/certain games

but then again a Hardcore Gamer could be referring to those who play table top games like Twilight Imperium

any time a term is used it should be defined lest someone have a different definition of that term (which is why I said: "when relating to Video Games")

then again I feel the OP was just bored and looking to troll

btw Shameless plug for Hardcore gamers thumb.gif

To me a hardcore gamer is more about their gaming than hardware. I know a ton of people I would consider hardcore gamers that play on fairly basic systems. Hardcore to me is someone that takes their gaming seriously. Someone that has set times of day set aside for gaming and all other things are scheduled around those times. Someone who puts in 6 or more hours a day of gaming, that gaming is more than a hobby to them.

Hardware is more about a techie or hardware enthusiast. We tend to make this mistake all the time and think most computer gamers are hardware geeks and this is simply not true. Most video gamers only care if they have enough hardware to play their games and really do not understand the hardware beyond the basics on their games system requirements.
