Hardware is more about a techie or hardware enthusiast. We tend to make this mistake all the time and think most computer gamers are hardware geeks and this is simply not true. Most video gamers only care if they have enough hardware to play their games and really do not understand the hardware beyond the basics on their games system requirements.

Yeah, I agree. It's just that, many gaming Youtubers I've seen all know things about computer hardware. Maybe they have to, to get good FPS while recording on high details for good videos, I dunno.

I think the term now of: "Hardcore Gamer" (when relating to Video Games) is more closely akin to the Gamer of 15+ years ago, those who have a rig powerful enough to play CPU/GPU intensive games and do so at a level of competence.

also Those who purchase Hardware greater than their NEEDS to be able to play games/certain games

but then again a Hardcore Gamer could be referring to those who play table top games like Twilight Imperium

any time a term is used it should be defined lest someone have a different definition of that term (which is why I said: "when relating to Video Games")

then again I feel the OP was just bored and looking to troll

btw Shameless plug for Hardcore gamers thumb.gif

Haha, yes, I didn't think about it like that. That the gamer of 15 years ago is the hardcore gamer of today. Well, partially because 15 years ago I didn't even know what the word "gamer" even meant.

How am I bored and looking to troll? In what way am I trolling? In what way would my OP stir up a lot of anger from people who read the post? Not a single person has been mad over what I wrote so far. Either it wasn't a troll or it was the worst troll ever.

I mean, if I've played a game once in my life and I never touch a game ever again, I doubt anybody would call me a gamer. So how regular is regular? And what type of games? If I play minesweeper because the internet died and I can't check Facebook, and I like minesweeper, am I a gamer? What if you don't have free time to game but when you do, you jump at the opportunity to play some games? You rarely game but you really want to game. Are you a gamer?

I reject the blithe posts in this thread that "gamer" simply means "one who plays any kind of game". He's not asking how Webster would define it, and that's not how it's used in the current lexicon. The subtleties we all ascribe to the term is what he's after.

To me, a "gamer" is someone who explicitly chooses to set aside some significant portion of his leisure time to play video games. He therefore places value on gaming. He's not just playing Candy Crush while on the bus...that's just filling time. But if that Candy Crush lover decides to forego other entertainment options to play Candy Crush instead...while I might question his choices, I would probably still call him a gamer. (A lame gamer, but a gamer nonetheless.)

But in the modern lexicon, "gamer" does imply video games. I'm old and sadly too grey, and in all my years have never once heard a Monopoly, chess, checkers, etc. player ever referred to as a "gamer".

I can see that. Although I might just call them either a "young gamer" or "unemployed gamer", because no one else can devote six hours to gaming. tongue.gif

I always railed against the "hardcore gamer" label, I'm sure a search on OCN would find them. It was almost always used to mean "I'm too cool for stooped kiddie Mario games, I wanna kill people in Battlefield!" Which irritates the heck out of me...fantastic games come in all shapes and sizes. If you don't play a variety of game genres, I have a hard time considering you "hardcore". Rather, I consider you "specialized" or "niche"...or in some cases, a snob! biggrin.gif
