One thing u said confused me, u can't play farcry 3 with a good fps, that's odd, I remember when I was playing farcry 3, back then I was still on my single 7870 setup and no overclock CPU, but I get a stable 60 fps in high settings, it had some strange problem with DX11 in earlier verison, but fixed after 1.03 update I think, I could be wrong since I haven't touch that game in a long time, but u may want to check that.

For skyrim, go with Nvidia, if u are using ENBs, it's much easier and less trouble, and even SLI mode can run perfectly good, I suggest GTX 770.

If u want to use AMD cards, just don't use crossfire, get as big vram as possible, 2GB is a start.....but a 280x 3GB can make a big different for skyrim, my friend just upgrade from 7870 to 280x 3GB(that's how I got the 2nd 7870 for free), his fps in skyrim goes up 15-20 in the same settings, with 180 mods installed(mostly graphic/character improvement mods, which are the most demanding mods), he can get a solid 50 fps outside and 60 fps indoors.

my fault. I beat far cry 3 and I'm 6 hours into skyrim with 117 mods. my skyrim performance monitor shows my max vram usage at 1.5 GB vram and 2 GB ram. I am using the borderless windowed mode which gives me a lot of performance gain even though some of my mods still make it ctd. right now my 7870 can pull its weight. maybe next months check will allow me to buy a 280

That's not very heavy on mods, not on graphic side , since your vram usage is that low.

CTD is another problem, I find most people's skyrim CTD cause they have some mod problems, not their vram or ram getting busted, but then again skyrim is using a rather aggressive way to clean ram usage, try the new skse 1.7 Alpha, it helps alot in relocate data in memory , and remember to use script cleaner to remove junk scripts left in your save, use SMCO to reduce your texture size, follow BOSS's suggesting, make right load order and clean your mod's ESM and ESP files, use method of exclusion(I don't the right words in english) to remove or fix wrong mods after that, pray for any gods u believe.

also I hear broaderless window mode may have problems with certain mods, I can't remember which since I never use it.

I'm on my phone right now but when I get to my PC I will show you the load order from nmm because I'm not sure if my mods are optimal since I get some ctd. I made a merged patch is tes5edit and I used BOSS
