Onboard sound is dying, good external cards?

So recently my computers been doing a wierd thing, when watching youtube for example, the audio will just stop after a few mins, and in spotify, the audio gets really crackly.

I have to either refresh youtube or close and restart spotify, and the audio works again.

what I know:
audio drivers are up to date, and several reinstalls did not fix the problem
sound issues coming from computer directly ( not my speakers )

I have an uber cheap usb sound card thing ( meant for laptops and such ) and i don't have the static problems with it, but the audio quality of it is crap and sounds horrible ( just a cheap plug in play 'audio booster' )

anyway, what are some good bang for the buck external sound cards.

MUST be OSX and Windows friendly

It will be plugged into a reciver so power output and hi-fi quality is not that important.

Since you have a receiver, you don't need a sound card... you just need a cheap USB to SPIDF converter. You could even use the existing HDMI ports on your computers to stream audio to your receiver.

To preserve sound quality, avoid using analog out with anything. Your reciever's DAC is a heck of alot better than cheap sound card.

EDIT:
Something with Dolby/DTS support would be nice if you have a surround setup or watch alot of movies (though that isn't necessary with HDMI).

well, i just bought a cheapo optical cable on amazon, so i'm going to try using that and see what happens. ( though if onboard is truely dying, it won't help anything ) but I can change my settings on the OS's to optical out and see if that makes a difference.

I'm running running a fruit logo'd OS alongside Windows on one machine, and audio can be tricky. Though up until recently it was working fine.

adn I don't have surround, just 2 audioengine p4 speakers, and a Jambo Sub in a pioneer reciver.

Use that optical cable to connect the computer to the receiver. 99% chance that'll get around the problem.

Ah, I thought you were running a mac laptop or something.

HDMI should work as well, if your computer has it.

yeah, I have my tower and things in a media closet, and a 15' optical was $10 shipped ( amazon prime ) vs a more expensive HDMI of the same length.

Actually I don't. No xbox, tv, or anything like that, I use computers for everything, and the only one I have is connected to my projector which runs through the attic, and I don't want to take it down just to test.
